I hereby confirm that I have read and understood the forum rules. Image from: Life of Pi Member since: May Blu-ray collection: Bottlehead Crack: Assembled this weekend warning: lots of pics.

I purchased a Bottlehead Crack amp, which has high ratings and is supposed to mesh well with the Sennheiser HD s, which are one of my favorite headphones. I got the parts over a month ago, but I've been really busy. I sat down on Saturday and put it together. Took about 7 hours total. It was a lot of fun for me, and I enjoyed almost every minute of it I did swear a lot when I had to place two LEDs into the 9-pin tube socket.

That was a stinking P. However, checking voltage was something I've never done before, so I didn't want to electrocute myself and I sent the rig to his place. He said the solder points were great, and there were zero issues with the voltage checks. So I plugged in. It sounds great! Not "amazing", but I said "woah". That's the meaning for "nice!

I want to give some time with the "stock" build to get used to the sound, and maybe I'll notice the difference when I upgrade. Overall, I'm happy with the amp.

And now pics: It started with just the aluminum chassis and four wooden blocks. I still have a lot more audio testing to do, but I am already impressed. I am looking forward to spending some time with this, and then installing the Speedball upgrade. I wonder if I'll even notice a difference.

Either way, I really had a good time putting it together. Last edited by KcMsterpce; at PM. Thanks given by: Badas Top contributor.

Home Theater Gallery: DVD collection: Blu-ray reviews: Trading Score: What a great write up. Thanks a lot for the effort. You have a great amp. I did some more sound testing with headphones on this fun little amp.

It was tremendous, tight and spectacular. Santana's "Batuka" from the third album has amazing separation with the latin drumbeats and guitar parts So, also did a few Dr. Chesky tracks and the track "Contamination" from the soundtrack to The Thing.

I actually got a few shivers down my spine listening to the percussive string frenzy! My other headphone tests: I tried the HD s with the headphone output on my AKs, which is less than ideal. I continued my headphone tests with the AK still plugged in It didn't provide the punch that the Sennheisers get from the amp, so I moved on after about half an hour of listening. MrSpeakers Alpha Dogs - A big disappointment. It doesn't have the juice to drive these headphones, so it sounded anemic. Even with the volume dimed out to "11", it didn't have the juice to make the Dogs scream.

They are very hard to drive headphones, and the only amp I have currently that does well with the Alpha Dogs is my Centrance Hifi M I only plugged them in for a few minutes and decided that Alpha Dogs and Crack don't go too well together.

They are known to take some "work" to get sounding right. Skip the Crack if you're using these cans. I have also heard good things about the Crack and HD s, but I don't own those yet so I can't attest to these claims. I am in no way disappointed. Sometimes it's surprisingly good. In a week or so, I plan to install the Speedball upgrade.

Conclusion: Anyone who is on a budget and wants to get some right-proper juice out of their HD s, the Bottlehead Crack is a great budget DIY kit that is not just fun to build, but also provides The Goods.

However, with that same amount of money you could end up satisfied enough with the cheaper Fiio E12 or E18 with cash to spare for other upgrades. You just wouldn't get to have your own custom assembly to show off to the five friends that you know who care about headphones and amps!!

A lot of that rounded, "organic" character also presents itself with headphone amps. I might be more sensitive to it because of my guitar amp love. With that said, solid state headphone amps are precision monsters, and the clarity and speed of presentation can be great depending on what you're listening to and what you're listening WITH.

Moreover, if you DO go the Fiio route or something similar in budget , you might get more diversity if you own many kinds of headphones. This doesn't mean I wish to detract you from giving this quaint experience of building a Bottlehead a try for yourself!

I might try it with other headphones, such as the D or my Steelseries Siberia V2, but my guess is I won't be as happy with the results as I am with my initial reasons for purchasing one in the first place: my HD s. Seriously well done. I'm not going to do a Woo review like that. You own the Alpha Dogs.

They are on my Radar. Do you like them? Originally Posted by Badas. Originally Posted by KcMsterpce. I love the Alpha Dogs, but they're so power-hungry hehe "hungry" Dogs that I almost don't have the equipment to bring them proper justice.

As mentioned above, the HiFi M8 does a pretty good job with them, but your WooAudio should knock those suckers into overdrive. I have to find a place out in town that will let me test high end amps. I think I know a few shops, but I never brought my own headphones there and I don't know if they'll let me use their equipment to test them. I plan on going to those stores soon, though, with my Dogs and XLR cables.

Comfort-wise, they are quite heavy, but don't feel like they are at all. I wore them for 5 hours on a plane ride once They are like giant pillows encapsulating the ears. They will be great for the winter to keep my ears warm! Thanks for that review. Nothing can be heavy compared to the Audeze. As long as they clamp well and are comfortable I don't care about weight. Haha I actually didn't know the weight of the Audeze or the Dogs. I don't mind weight either, as long as comfort remains.

In terms of how strong the Dogs "clamp" over the head I wouldn't go running with them, or weightlifting because they'll certainly shift if I lay down. Also, they don't get that hot, which really surprises me.

Lengthy posts, but if you wanna know, I don't mind answering. Thanks given by: KcMsterpce I installed the Speedball yesterday. It was kind of a pain, I didn't "enjoy" the process nearly as much as the stock Crack build. Now, it only plays the left channel and there's irregular voltage on one of the terminals v instead of v.

This is a quick build log of Bottlehead Crack OTL tube amplifier with some pictures and little stories. A quick write-up of what this is and why I got it: The Bottlehead Crack is a high-end amplifier for your headphones. Some audio equipment had a high impedance, making them sound and quiet when the volume is maxed out. An amplifier is used to boost the volume when this occurs. You may notice it has two tubes on it. These tubes are to increase and power the audio signal. I started with staining the wood and painting the chassis. Before painting, I glued the cabinet together and sanded it down with grit sandpaper thoroughly. I used a paintbrush for the first three coats with 12 hours wait between each layer.
