Wharfedale SFB3 a possibility? Smitthy , May 6, Messages: 7, Location: Richmond, CA. I'm in the process of doing exactly the same thing. With that process now moving, I've got to find an appropriate speaker.
As near as I can tell, I'll probably end up with maybe 2 or more possibilities. All of which will be cobbled together by me. For where I am, I'm finding it a lot easier to find a period correct enclosure, then hunt down some combination of drivers to install to the enclosure. I'm also doing this on a pretty small budget, so spending or more on just the driver alone isn't going to be a possibility.
And yes, just popping in any ol' driver into any ol' enclosure can be problematic or a real disaster and waste of money and time. However, after my Wharfedale Super 12 project, I'm finding these older drivers are more forgiving than the more modern versions.
This means I'm actually able to get something that can easily raise the hairs on my arms to my head and down to my legs without laying out vast amounts of cash. Messages: 6, My mono rig is set up with a GE A coaxial corner speaker; c. Its a fairly sensitive speaker.
I drive it with a 10w HK integrated mono tube amp. The combination gets too loud, if turned up beyond half way. Messages: 1, Location: Portland, OR. I'd pursue a JBL Hartsfield. If you are OK with using later pro versions of the compression driver and don't mind using non JBL horns and lenses you could get the same look and sound.

Or, you could get a free-standing version with two optional sand-filled rear panels for the two back sides that lean against the two corner wall surfaces. The Wharfedale sound of yore is open, coherent, and dynamic, but also laid-back, completely-non-strident, and very, very-musical.
An engaging speaker, even in mono form, just like the old Universities. Either brand is a no-brainer for mono duty, especially when paired with a tube Fisher. Seriously though, the Aristocrat is what came to mind. The one mentioned above seemed kinda pricey, but they show up single all the time so you can shop a bit.

They come up every now and again at antique stores, consignment stores, Craigslist, estates, etc The University's are nice because they are in very attractive cabinets, they are very efficient and often are horn loaded. I liked the sound of Stephens back then, but you are going way out on a limb. You might be able to find some older Bozak model , or The has two woofers a mid and 4 tweeters. You want tweeters and mids with aluminum cones, stay away from paper mids and tweeters. The has one woofer, a mid and two tweeters and the has 4 woofers 1 mid and tweeters. The Bozaks are moderately efficient. The was rated at 25 watts, the 35 watts, and the 75 watts. I'd look for a Mac MC or You must log in or sign up to reply here.
