Magnavox 128 tube amplifier

Please note that effective immediately we have updated the Emporium Rules for payment options. In the past, we had required people to use Paypal to head off attempted fraud, which has been a concern for many years. However, we are coming into a new era with people doing different manners of monetary transactions. Essentially, we'll no longer require anyone to be tied to Paypal only; people can now use whatever payment they want, but we want to let people know they are on their own. The rule is below as it now reads and will be enforced.

Here is a quote from another source: This is a Magnavox E tube mono amplifier. It's a basic amplifier unit, no preamp. It works as is though I wouldn't use it like that. Magnavox made several chassis similar to this. Except for some details here and there they are more alike than different.

Four 6V6 output tubes in push pull parallel. A pair of 5Y3 rectifier tubes. A single 12AX7 is used as the input stage. Why did I love coming across these? It's easy to convert these to a wonderful stereo amplifier of about 30 watts a side with the addition of a pair of decent output transformers and a little know how. Most of the circuitry is already in place. Most of the sockets are too. To do it right you need to add another nine pin mini socket and an octal.

The octal goes where the knock out is between the two capacitors in the middle of the chassis. The fabulous Green Monster was based on one of these. The stockbroker that bought it used it on his Watt Puppy III's and said it beat every one of the ultra expensive amplifiers he already had. Same with all the fancy pants amplifiers that his well heeled friends brought over. He said he had a lot of fun with that at his friends expense.

Anyway, I'm still not building because I just got too burned out on it so someone else can have some fun with this. The unit is completely stock. I didn't even shine it up. The only thing I did with it was to add a jumper wire so it turns on when you plug it in. Properly modified, the unit can handle 6L6 output tubes easily. In the original configuration, the unit powered a preamp section and the power transformer was designed in a lusty enough fashion to run that extra load all day long.

With 5Y3 rectifiers, the unit currently puts v on the plates and screens. The standing bias is 19v on the output tubes. If you chose to use a pair of 5U4 or 5AR4 you can expect to see another 30 or so useful volts to work with which is perfect for running 6L6 softly to obtain maximum depth.
