Cat5 as speaker wire

My new house is pre-wired to have whole house sound, but all I have is a Cat 5 in the wall in the kitchen and some speaker in the ceiling holes. I understand how to do the speakers, but how or what do I use to connect the Cat 5 wiring into something that makes sound.

I have plenty of Cat5 handy. My question is, is it decent quality and is there a special way to run it? Thanks in advance. Nov 10, 5, 51 Cat5 would be a poor choice for speaker wire. The inside wires are just too small and fragile. Feb 1, 9, 1, I used cat5 for digital audio and it didnt work. You need a thicker gage and better isolaton. I doubt it would be a good choice for speakers, especially if your run is 20 feet or more. And when you're starting to use the bandwidth of the higher specced cables, care has to be taken with the routing, installation and termination or they won't meet the stated specs and standards. I have seen plenty of "sparky" installed V line projects using alarm multicore bell wire and Cat5. Seem to get away with it. Not really best practice though, can't say I fancy it myself. New Posts. Long speaker cable run, can I use CAT5?
LOG IN. Do you think they sound as good as a mid priced cable you would buy? He said some AMPS may become unstable and need a Zobel network has any one had that problem with them? Edit Delete. CAT5 is not made for audio. I would avoid it and would certainly never modify an amp to accomodate it. I braided up a pair of biwire Cat5's BIG improvement over what I had, though admittedly I was starting from a pretty basic cable.

We purchased a surround sound system, and I'm throwing around the idea of using Cat5 through the attic to wire the rear speakers to the back of the living room, using about 35 feet of cable. The rear speakers are Watts each, and I wasn't sure if this was even possible. And if so, would it be possible to use two pairs for positive and two for negative, allowing me to run one cat5 cable for both speakers? I'll run it to a single wall mount where both speakers will tie into. Just curious

The 12 Ga wire to the Martin Subs are all twisted pairs - one pair per conduit. Now we are considering putting LCD confidence monitors in front of the stage for the vocalists.
