Dd wrt wifi repeater
Does your signal sometimes drop? If yes, you may have explored wireless repeaters as a potential option. This trusty open-source firmware has a feature called a repeater bridge, which can simplify your life. The two segments are on the same subnet, allowing broadcasts to reach all machines. Essentially, this means that you can boost and extend your wireless signal with just any old router and DD-WRT!

Wlan Repeater
In the old days, when you wanted to extend the range of a wireless access point, you had to set up a WDS, or wireless distribution system, coordinating two or more WDS-capable routers. Setting up a WDS is a perfectly respectable thing to do. But a WDS can be a needy thing. At a minimum, each router in the network must support WDS. For the most reliable results, each router should be the same model running the same firmware. Typically, you would use wireless repeater mode to rebroadcast a signal too weak for your wireless clients to pick up reliably — assuming that your DD-WRT router can pick up the host AP, of course.
Wireless repeater mode also groups your local clients into their own subnet — a potential feature for privacy or a potential hassle for LAN routing , depending on your needs. Because wireless repeater mode is a new feature, and technically still in beta, using it puts you on the leading edge of DD-WRT technology.
This also means you may run into problems with the limitations of wireless repeater mode, and there are some. At the time of this writing, wireless repeater mode does not yet function in bridged mode. This means that, as noted earlier, clients connected to your DD-WRT repeater must be inside their own subnet, preventing them from seeing clients connected to the host AP. For example, if your host AP assigns clients to the While clients on both subnets will be able to access the Internet assuming the host AP has Internet access , clients on the two subnets cannot see each other.
Take note of any wireless security currently enabled on your host router. If you are using WEP, note your passphrase and key length bit, bit, etc. If your client PC is configured to receive an IP automatically, it should be assigned an address by the router. Step 1. The default login is root and password is admin. Of course, you should change these. Step 2.
The most important setting here is the Local IP Address. This must be a different subnet than that which the host AP is on. Our host AP is on You can leave the remaining settings alone — the DHCP enabled, etc. Your router will reboot. Because it will restart with a new IP address, you will need to repair the client connection at your PC to join the new subnet. Step 3. If you want any special firewall settings, you should configure these on the host router.
Step 4. Leave the remaining settings at their defaults. Some claim that setting Sensitivity Range ACK Timing to 0 improves performance, which you might experiment with once the repeater setup is tested and working. Your PC that is wired to the router should be able to access the Internet, assuming that the host router can. To perform this trick, you will create a Virtual Interface. This will behave as a software AP, broadcasting its own SSID and bridging external wireless clients to the router, which is itself a wireless client to the host router in this configuration.
Click the Add button and the page will refresh again, with new fields for configuring the Virtual Interface. For best results, this should be different from the SSID for the host router. You will see this SSID available when your wireless clients scan for access points. Leave the remaining fields at their default values as seen here, and be sure to click Save Settings. Step 5. In repeater mode, you need to consider two dimensions of security:. Second, do you want security between your repeater and local wireless clients?
Obviously, you must enter the correct shared key as configured on the host router. In theory, you can select a different security mode for your repeated network the virtual interface than you are using with the host router. You could choose to use no security on the host router, and secure only the repeated network; or you could use security only at the host router and none on the repeated network.
Users report varying success mixing and matching security modes, most likely due to DD-WRT V24 still being a maturing beta. Ideally, you should initially set up your repeater with no security for either interface. This assumes that you have administrative access to your host router if it is currently secured. Once the repeater is verified as working, add each layer of security separately to best pinpoint any problems. Step 6. There you can click on Site Survey , which will pop up a window showing available wireless networks.
If the IP is 0. Some people find it helpful to configure the DD-WRT as a simple wireless client first, before setting it up as a repeater. As a client, you do not have a virtual interface, since the client can only share the host router through wired connections. If client mode does not work, be sure to check the security arrangement between the host router and the DD-WRT router. The primary application for this would be to use your repeater in an, ahem, mobile configuration.
Click Save Startup and restart the router. For the especially sophisticated, you can download a DD-WRT script called AutoAP, which can dynamically detect and repeat an available AP with the strongest signal, and can even associate with secure APs if you provide a set of keys to choose from.

Turn Your Old Router into a Range-Boosting Wi-Fi Repeater
However, it is important to keep in mid that in order to enjoy a satisfactory connection speed, you need to get a router with a high capacity processor that can handle the task and offer you a good navigation experience in all your internet enabled devices. The high quality routers that can guarantee a better performance with a VPN tend to cost more, but it is an investment worth making if you want to avoid a painfully slow connection. However, this does not mean that if you already have a router and wish to replace it with a more powerful model, the old device will be useless. Thanks to the versatility of DD-WRT, which allows multiple usage options, you can give your old router another purpose by turning it into a wireless repeater.

Today we are discussing DD-WRT and specifically how you can do some cool stuff that you would not be able to do with your current wireless router. With DD-WRT firmware loaded, your router is able to do some tricks it might not be able to do before. One of these things might involve the repeater bridge mode, which can improve your WiFi range at home. So what is the plan? Occasionally you bring your laptop from the living room. Obviously there is no arguing and you need to go wireless. The fastest wireless connections you get now follow the N standard with a theoretical maximum of Mbps. In reality you will probably only get a fraction of that, because of the distance you need to cover. In my house I get about 25 Mbit with going one floor up and passing a bathroom.

Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It only takes a minute to sign up. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. I went through the instructions on this page and got to the point that the DD-WRT router can talk with the modem. My goal is to use the LinkSys as a wireless repeater, but for now, while I'm testing, I'm connecting to the LinkSys router via wire.
Setup a dd-wrt router as repeater bridge
I recently moved into a very unique apartment on the outskirts of town. The views are incredible but the WiFi is weak. The WiFi is transmitted across the main part of the house and then has to travel through a few adobe walls. Adobe bricks are a traditional building material in New Mexico. The bricks are made of dried mud.
DD-WRT Tutorial 5: Wireless Repeater
Having a spare router at home can be very useful, especially if there is a corner in your home that suffers from continuous failures because the signal is weak. A wireless repeater is a device that allows you to extend the signal of your WiFi network so that it has a greater range. By configuring a router as a repeater it functions as two segments that are on the same subnet. The two routers connected to the same network can receive requests to the connected equipment. When a new computer connects from either point, it is assigned an IP address, but one of the two segments is the one that functions as a DHCP server. The repeater is a good alternative to avoid making a wired network that can be expensive in infrastructure costs. While wired connections are fairly stable, wireless connections are gaining ground every day.
How to configure a DD-WRT router as a WiFi wireless repeater?
DD-WRT is really a powerful router firmware and one of many cool things you can do with it is — to setup a WiFi repeater bridge. Why do that? DD-WRT is an open source universal router firmware.
How to setup a DD-WRT WiFi repeater bridge
It is called a "Repeater Bridge" and it is not a relayd type bridge. In the DD-WRT "Repeater Bridge" scenario there is a Primary, Internet connected router that uses a wireless bridge to connect to a Secondary router on the same subnet as the Primary and all devices hosts on the Secondary share the same subnet address as those on the Primary.. Plenty of ways to implement a Layer 2 wireless bridge. The Broadcom "relay bridge" is implemented entirely at the client and can work with a standard AP. There is no direct equivalent to it in open source. OK, here is the situation.
Repeater Bridge
A wireless bridge connects two LAN segments with a wireless link. The two segments are in the same subnet and look like two Ethernet switches connected by a cable to all computers on the subnet. Since the computers are on the same subnet, broadcasts reach all machines. Use a wireless bridge to transparently connect computers in one room to computers in a different room when you cannot—or don't want to—run an Ethernet cable between the two rooms. A standard wireless bridge Client Bridge connects wired clients to a secondary router as if they were connected to your main router with a cable. Secondary clients share the bandwidth of a wireless connection back to your main router. Of course, you can still connect clients to your main router using either a cable connection or a wireless connection.
That is a long story. Anyway, this blog is going to heavily cite the contents on this page. Before we start to tackle the problem , the open source firmware DD-WRT is strongly recommended to flash your router. In my case, I got a lot of such routers in hand and am selling them on Craigslist if anybody is interested in it, please let me know.
