Page 1 of 2. Dear Slutz, I just bought a Mesa Boogie oversized dual rectifier cabinet in great condition with a rare color of tolex or whatever material covers Mesa cabs as well as a rare color grille cloth.

Tragically, this 2x12 seems to generate way too much low end.. I am playing it with its proper amp a dual rectifier. There is still too much bass.. How is this possible? I bought this cab because it had a good reputation for recording.. This one at least with my amp has too much low end. Any solutions? Will running my dual rectifier with EL34s instead of 6L6s help tame the bottom? If I have to just buy another cab what cab will fix this problem?

Send help. Thanks in advance. What other cabs have you played this amp through that had the right amount of low end for you? What speakers are in the Mesa? Jim Williams. I use a 2x12 Thiel designed cab. I sealed the ports to tighten up the low end.

It's never too bassy or dark. I use various Eminence speakers, the Wizard is my favorite. I was never a fan of Randy's designs, I would try another head as well. Try removing the back panel, sometimes that helps. But it does sound like a strange issue, I too have rectifier 2x12 cabs and I don't have that problem, maybe there's something off with the speakers or the wiring.

If the problem is to the extent that you indicate, there must be something weird, either in the room [modes] or some other way. Otherwise everyone who has one of those setups would complain.

Try moving the cab. And don't stack it on, or against, another cab. The Marshall has the correct amount of lows. But the 2x12 OS horizontal is not like that. Even when I stand it up vertically too..

Like you can easily hear the muffling from the blockage.. The logo is going a full quarter of the way into each of the V30s This is simply bad design. John Eppstein. My Studio. Seal the ports. That will remove the excessive bottom.

Thiele-Small bass reflex cabs which the Mesa is are tuned for optimum bass response, that's what Thiele-Small tuning does. OP Have you considered just returning the thing if you don't like the way it sounds, and buying one you like? You did ask "what cabinet has the tightest bass? You could just buy a Marshall. IMO, you shoudn't go carving it up, or sealing it up, or anything like that.

If you don't like it, just get one that you do like instead. Just get a cab that sounds right to begin with. But first, take it somewhere else and play through it with whatever amps you know are working right, and find out for sure if you like it or not. YMMV, take it easy, and I hope you get it sorted. Best, audioforce. The Rectifier 2x12 cab is not ported.

Sounds like a mis-aligned reflex cabinet If it's not completely sealed or completely open, the opening that's there is acting as a port. It's mis-aligned with those speakers - open it up. I say return it before you do anything to it. Everybody's guessing, and probably some good guesses, but still, if you don't like it I wouldn't try to rebuild the thing. Just return it while you can. And maybe check in and let everyone know if you even still have the thing.

Best, audioforce [loves mysteries]. Fay Smearing. Swap the polarity of the connectors on one of the speakers Originally Posted by Mario-C. I find it hard to imagine the difference in physical attitude of the speakers to be responsible for reduced low end of any substantial amount which brings me right back to the speakers themselves.

Yes you are absolutely right on this. That is unacceptable to me, too, and I'd cut that out in a heartbeat or build my own cab or grille board. Interesting thread, Bro.

I hope we can resolve it though obviously the actual work is on you. All any of us responders can offer is some knowledge and experience, abstract ideas. Best wishes! What room are you playing the thing in? Also, I have listened with my ears very close to the speakers, as I am gauging what a close mic will pick up in recording, and it has the same problem from a very close perspective as well as from a further back perspective.

It sounds much more like a physical design problem i. It's very unusual for guitar speakers in a sealed cabinet to output a lot of bass - especially vintage-voiced ones The suspension is too stiff. For internal resonances in the bass frequencies, you'd need something well over 3 feet 1 meter. The rear panel may not be stiff enough, causing it to resonate - but you would hear that when you tapped on it If you want to rule out the room effects, swap the position of the 4x and 2x.

If the excessive bass follows the cabinet, it's not the room. At this point, I'm guessing that the drivers in that cabinet are not actually guitar speakers. If the frames look right, they may have been re-coned. But I guess that is what the Nu Metalers wanted at the time. I do intend to play hard rock but not metal with this cab, so maybe I just made the wrong choice for what I consider as being great tone.. But IMO it just silly how much undefined lows this thing is putting out. At this point I am agreeing with tINY.

I suspect the speakers have been either damaged or reconed. There are extremely few variables in a true infinite baffle sealed enclosure. The only effect of the cabinet is size and shape which mainly takes the form of standing waves rather easily de-tuned and the cushion of air the volume of the cabinet provides, which is also possible to fairly easily to tune.

Also standing waves tend to cause LESS low end response, not more. The overwhelming factor in a sealed infinite baffle cabinet is the speakers. I suggest trying two of the speakers from the Marshall cab in the Mesa cab.

That's a bit of a pita but it will deliver results and may be easier than identifying whether or not the English made V30s have been damaged or reconed. Incidentally it is also unlikely that damage would increase low end so I'm betting on reconed. I'm quite interested in how this turns out.

I played the Mesa 2x12 vertical slant and thought that sounded great and tight and modern and hi/fi.. exactly what I wanted. But the 2x12 OS.
