Lowther speaker enclosures
A loudspeaker enclosure or loudspeaker cabinet is an enclosure often rectangular box-shaped in which speaker drivers e. Enclosures may range in design from simple, homemade DIY rectangular particleboard boxes to very complex, expensive computer-designed hi-fi cabinets that incorporate composite materials, internal baffles, horns, bass reflex ports and acoustic insulation. Loudspeaker enclosures range in size from small "bookshelf" speaker cabinets with 4" woofers and small tweeters designed for listening to music with a hi-fi system in a private home to huge, heavy subwoofer enclosures with multiple 18" or even 21" speakers in huge enclosures which are designed for use in stadium concert sound reinforcement systems for rock music concerts. The primary role of the enclosure is to prevent sound waves generated by the rearward-facing surface of the diaphragm of an open speaker driver interacting with sound waves generated at the front of the speaker driver. Because the forward- and rearward-generated sounds are out of phase with each other, any interaction between the two in the listening space creates a distortion of the original signal as it was intended to be reproduced. As such, a loudspeaker cannot be used without installing it in a baffle of some type, such as a closed box, vented box, open baffle, or a wall or ceiling infinite baffle.

This is a pair of Lowther Acousta Twin loudspeakers that have been knocking around the place for about 8 years now, probably longer. They came with a very large record collection. I heard them in situ very briefly with a radio connected, but at low volume. They sounded fantastic, although one unit sounded way better than the other. Very extraordinary clean and clear mid-range, not so great in the lower range before I connected them I was listening through Tannoy 15 inch monitor golds , but I was so stunned that I immediately thought the trade-off was well worth it.
On investigating and opening up the cabinets to examine the PM2 drive units, and also getting advice from Lowther the company is still in operation it became apparent that the foam surrounds had perished severely in one cabinet, and the units in the other cabinet were also on their way out.
So I would need new foam surrounds. And then only by spending a little more I could get completely new units under the Lowther For Life Exchange Scheme, which I have opted for. I am told they will sound even better than the originals the ones that sounded great even though they were on their last legs!
I cannot wait. It is a single cabinet comprising two separate horns, which can be used for monaural, monophonic and stereophonic reporoduction. PM2A drive units could be fitted with the use of a special mounting. The perspex top deflector and side wings can be adjusted to suit the placement of the speaker within the room. The cabinet was available in a variety of finishes including walnut, sapele, oak, tola, teak and natural. You must be logged in to post a comment.

Full Range
Lowther is a traditional and legendary loudspeaker manufacturer in Great Britain with a history back to It is especially famous for its full range drive units fitted in folded backloaded bass horn cabinets. I came in touch with it almost 40 years ago and still use these loudspeakers. Unfortunately, using the EX3 in the Fidelio in my new living room was initially rather disappointing. Anyway, I finally found a surprisingly simple but for Lowther rather unusual solution for the problems. My journey and the tools I used may help you to improve your own Lowther or not Lowther-based system at home as well.

This very light hand made paper cone with an exceptionally strong magnet and a very light cone enables the driver to reproduce the full spectrum of audible sound and beyond. For example their strongest magnetic assembly, that of the Lowther PM4Ahas an enormous energy density and produces a gap flux of 2. The PM4A is weighted 10Kg each! When you get good amplitude, you must trade off in phase response, result in poor imaging. Lowther is truly a single, full range driver. The typical frequency range is 30 Hz to 20 KHz. No more crossovers are needed. Say goodbye to phase errors, the main cause of poor imaging. Lowther drivers are very revealing, very coherent, and very musical. Lowther puts you much closer to real music!
Lowther Horn Speakers
I like the sound of that Nelson. Do you have any size-preferences for the baffle, or have you been trying a few out? Find More Posts by Scottmoose. Thank you to all here, The baffle cutout needed for the DX55 is 14cm 5. I do not mind trying the to build a cabinet providing it is relatively simple, no fancy curves etc.

Also in , Paul Voigt met O. During World War II, Paul was kept busy maintaining the horn speakers which he had successfully installed in cinemas. After the war, priority was given to the design of an improved driver, using new magnet materials. This driver had a flux density of 18, gauss 1. In Paul decided to move to Canada with his wife, setting up the North American sales network for his new designs, which he ran until the outbreak of the Korean War. He then taught electronics for a while before moving to Ottawa to work for the Canadian Government in radio regulations, until his retirement in

Lowther Acousta Twin loudspeakers in restoration
Claims priority, application Great Britain Jan. It is a further object of the invention to produce a loudspeaker, the size of which, taken into consideration with the range of musical frequencies reproduced, is rela tively small, while the transformation of energy from an electrical to an acoustical form is efiicient, thereby enabling it to beoperated from an electrical amplifier of moderate dimensions, with reduced electrical distortion. According to the present invention, a loudspeaker is constructed to reproduce a wide range of frequencies, by comprising in it a thin electrically driven diaphragm, one face of which communicates with a first acoustical boundary so dimensioned as to enable that face of the diaphragm to radiate efficiently waves whose frequencies lie in an upper part of the said frequency range, while the other face is acoustically coupled to a second acoustical boundary so dimensioned as to enable the eflicient radiation of waves whose frequencies lie in a lower part of the said range through the medium of an acoustical chamber having at least one input and one output orifice. By an acoustical boundary I mean a rigid structure surrounding a volume of air, which volume is capable of propagating acoustical vibrations, the rigidity of the structure being sufiicient to confine the propagation of vibrations substantially to the said volume of air.
It is not a transmission line needing a lot of damping material to tame resonances. Instead, it is a combination of all these loading systems, resulting in a wide-band resonator effective from 40 Hz to Hz. The system is tuned for maximum efficiency using as little damping material as possible. Using only a few 30 mm thick sheets of BAF wadding a soft synthetic fiber damping material for damping, the system exhibits none of the honking character often associated with full-range drivers used in poorly designed horn systems. All you need to do is to find the place for them in your room giving the best bass response. For more body in the bass place them closer to the back wall or even in the corner if you are using the lowest Q drivers.
October 27, , AM Welcome, Guest. Please login or register. Here is a good cabinet for Lowther speakers. Great bass as well. I have the CAD if you want. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite insane. Quote from: Steve on January 11, , PM.
Effective date : A loudspeaker enclosure having an improved full range driver and an improved enclosure assembly. A loudspeaker is a final element in a chain between a person and the sound that person desires to hear. As such, a loudspeaker must overcome many limitations to produce even reasonable musical fidelity.
Congratulations, words ... what another idea
Absolutely agree with you. In there is something also I think it is the excellent idea.
Prompt, where I can find it?
