Tom petty amp settings
An all-in-one solution for practice, learning and home recording, Spark is a feature-packed desktop amplifier and a triumph of amp innovation. Practice amps have come a long way from the low-tech combos of yore. Digital modeling and effects, built-in tuners and even rhythm patterns have become customary on modern examples, helping guitarists get great tone and assistance for woodshedding and songwriting. The app also has a virtual rhythm section you can jam with in a variety of genres, and its Smart Jam feature can learn and provide backing to any eight-measure chord progression you create. First and foremost, though, Spark is a desktop amp, and a tidy-looking one at that, dressed in supple black textured vinyl and sporting a classic-looking brown-and-tan grille cloth and removable leather handle.

Interview with Joe Perry
This release saw them break into the Top 10 for the first time, peaking at Number 2. Able to comfortably ride the new wave and rock trains simultaneously in the late-'70s, the Heartbreakers have always been a band that was cool to like. They succeeded. Speaking of Campbell, when we interviewed him for our January cover story , we made sure we reserved some time to discuss Damn the Torpedoes - the sessions, the gear, the mood and more. So we wanted to bring them in with us and try to get a big sound.
It was a lot of work. We spent weeks on songs - and days on a snare sound. Iovine was great on that record. He pushed us; he pushed us with the songs; he pushed us getting the sounds right. We knew it was an important song. We wanted to make that one especially good and we were just having trouble getting the sound or the groove. It went 50 takes, 80 takes, and I finally just walked out of the studio one day. We hung in there and we fought for it.
And we were going through and plugging in the Marshall, plugging in the Fender, plugging in whatever they had out there. You know, I had a Goldtop and a Broadcaster and a Strat. I think our songwriting is what kind of kept us going all these years. A Strat, a Broadcaster and a Goldtop. And then a Martin acoustic, a Gibson acoustic. First of all, the songs. We were blessed with some really good songs in that era. Whoever recorded that really knew their shit, you know? And the playing - we played pretty well, too!
He is also a recording and performing musician, and a former editor of Guitar World magazine and executive editor of Guitar Aficionado magazine. He has authored several additional books, among them Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, the companion to the documentary of the same name.

Disclaimer: Our Potent Pairing series aims to get you in the ballpark of the sounds on your favorite recordings using pedals we had laying around at the time. The pedals featured are not the exact pieces of gear used on the recordings. And as with previous installments, it's not just about these exact pedals. Joe shows you the broad strokes of how to get close to the sound using what's available.

Please download a browser that supports JavaScript, or enable it if it's disabled i. Anytune has a loop function which helps if you need to loop something to try to learn it. The Spark has the 4 presets that you can override and save to and select from the buttons on the amp , but I need way more tones for the 45 songs. Selecting the preset this way thru the Spark takes only a few seconds. I jammed last night on about 10 songs in about 45 minutes, look at my list, find the preset in app, select it which loads it to Spark , hit play on the song and play along. Once you download, make a list of where you put it, and then you can modify it as you need. People complain that as delivered, the Spark has too much bass there are threads about changing out the speakers and putting foam in the port to attempt to correct this, one of them I responded to , but I have not found this an issue when using the Sparks headphone out.

Overdrive and distortion
This is one reason why I froze my system in During his year career, Ulyate has worked extensively with a select group of household names that all played in the Traveling Wilburys: Jeff Lynne and Electric Light Orchestra , George Harrison and, most of all, Tom Petty. Ryan Ulyate knows a thing or two about the value of music and how to record it, because his father, Bill, played in the 20th Century Fox Orchestra, often under composers Lionel and Alfred Newman. He quickly found success when he engineered a record by Juan Gabriel a big artist in Latin America in the day that became a huge success, and a similar thing happened soon afterwards with an album by Alain Chamfort, who was big in France. Photo: Judith Crow Ulyate set up his own studio, located in a shed close to his house with great views over the Topanga Canyon, in Ulyate gives the lowdown on the recording and mixdown process, which took three years, off and on.
To capture the tone of Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Tom Petty – stay out of the way
This is especially true with some of our favorite guitar mics like the VR1 and RNR1 ribbons, since they naturally have a figure-8 pattern that leaves them open to whatever else is happening on stage. This doesn't just help the FOH mix either. Using an RF on a guitar cab or drums can make the multitrack of a live show significantly easier to mix. Until now, our FOH engineer clients have had to devise their own custom-assembled solutions to help deal with this problem.

Inside Track: Tom Petty's Hypnotic Eye
The market overflows with overdrive and distortion pedals. It can be a tough challenge to decide and to find pedals that suits your rig and purpose. The wrong pedal for your amp and guitar, can do more harm than good and cause a lot of frustration. Do I want boost, overdrive, distortion or fuzz? Will I be using two or more gain pedals at the same time? Overdrive and distortion pedals can be divided in two categories. Transparent and mids scooped and on the other side of the spectrum, compressed and mids boosted.

A Conversation with Grammy-winning producer Richard Dodd Excerpt from an interview originally done in with five-time Grammy winning engineer Richard Dodd. Richard Dodd is a transplanted Englishman who marches to the beat of a different drummer. One of the interesting things about your work with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is the diversity of sounds achieved with basically a rock quintet.
