In , Joe Williams found himself sitting in a Dubbo psychiatric unit, faced with a choice. In the years prior, Williams had managed to kick his addictions to illicit drugs and alcohol. But he had fallen into a destructive pattern of prescription drug use, and was struggling with his recently-diagnosed bipolar disorder. Williams says that day in Dubbo was one step in an ongoing journey to self-knowledge and recovery, but it marked a turning point. And he credits boxing and reconnecting with his Indigenous heritage as his shining lights. He had been scouted and signed by Sydney Roosters, who had recognised his natural talent on the football field.

MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER – Dan Clark

Stan "The Man" Longinidis born 25 June is an Australian retired heavyweight kickboxer and 8-time world kickboxing champion.

Born in Melbourne of Greek ethnicity, Longinidis is one of the few fighters to win world titles in four different styles of kickboxing competition: international rules, Oriental rules, full contact and Muay Thai. He is also an actor and motivational speaker. Stan Longinidis began practicing martial arts in after being inspired by watching a martial artist defeat five opponents in a night club brawl.

Despite knocking the American down in the opening round, Longinidis eventually lost a battle of attrition and accepted a split decision defeat - his first professional loss. On 6 December , Longinidis competed in one of the biggest and most controversial matches in history, against kickboxing superstar Dennis Alexio.

Fueled by media hype and personal animosity between the two fighters, [5] it was one of the most highly-anticipated martial arts events when Longinidis and Alexio finally met in Melbourne to compete for the vacant ISKA World Oriental Rules Heavyweight Championship. The match lasted just 15 seconds, with Alexio falling to the mat after receiving a low kick from his opponent. Longinidis was declared the winner by KO and became the new champion. Controversy arose when Alexio claimed to have broken his leg by stepping into a hole in the canvas, and thus the match's outcome was placed under review.

He began competing for the K-1 kickboxing promotion in March , becoming one of the first major fighters to be signed by the company. Longinidis lost by unanimous decision [8] but retained his title after asserting that the match had not taken place under WKA rules. Significant victories and setbacks marked Longinidis' career thereafter.

He qualified twice for the K-1 World Grand Prix , but was knocked out by Mike Bernardo in the quarterfinals [9] and was unable to compete in the tournament due to injury. He lost the championship in September of the same year to Andy Hug. He returned to the ring shortly afterwards for another several bouts before retiring for good in Longinidis was awarded a lifetime achievement award at a France martial arts expo in The commendation recognized his significant impact on kickboxing and his status as one of the most famous names in the history of the sport.

On 10 October , he became the first martial artist to be inducted in the Australian Sports Hall of Fame. He also managed kickboxing superstar Mike Zambidis.

Behind the searing rhetoric and policy clashes are battles of personality, in which patron-client links coalesce, regroup and solidify, rewarding loyalty with a top-down sharing of power and spoils. The paramount patron of the red shirts, Thaksin Shinawatra, has been especially resourceful at exerting full-spectrum influence, even in exile, from the red villages in the countryside to the corridors of the red building in Government House. Former business associate and current nemesis, Sondhi Limthongkul, has in his own way enjoyed something of a charmed existence, enjoying the discreet support of traditional power holders, wealthy supporters, media influence through ASTV and sheer good luck. The mutually antagonistic red shirt and yellow shirt movements were founded, funded and brought to life by feuding tycoons with down-to-earth idiosyncracies and contrasting personal styles whose bitter struggles played out in the media and tapped deep discontent. Even if the elite personality clashes fade, cease or subtly shift with time, and even if the principles work out an elite reconciliation deal of sorts, at the grassroots level the struggle they have unleashed will continue. Taking it to the streets, putting ideals on the line, challenging taboos and toying with new notions of what constitutes good governance and Thai identity are experiences so transformative as to engender long-lasting influence.
