I'm looking for some advice and information on setting up a nice little system for my lounge.
I love the idea of putting together some beautiful classic equipment, something that has aesthetic as well as musical quality. I have a great appreciation for fine engineering, steel, wood and glass, glowing valves, humming transformers, cables everywhere! I have all the modern technology I need but what I really desire is to go back and feel something real.
So, what would you spend your money on? I want a nice turntable, amp and speakers, new or second hand and I am ready to buy now. Thanks and happy New Year to all. For a lot of vintage gear, the best place to start looking is here The Vintage Knob - Online vintage audio museum, forum and image bank There are some beautiful examples of industrial design in the UK such as Lecson although the chances of finding a good one are around zero now ,but this is a good place to begin. There are so many good vintage tube amps around, but most attract premium prices now,and the likes of Quad,Leak and Radford all are expensive.
Kei86 Well-known Member. Luxman made some of the best japanese tube amps going too, but they are even less common. Certainly up to the same standards as the quad II. The speakers are naff, skip them.
The other good APM model is the 22 and the smaller After those, the the APM series became a lot cheaper and lower quality. I would certainly recommend spending a few hours browsing TVK, also have a look at audioScope - his prices are high but the man knows his stuff and believe it or not he does sell that stuff.
Good for some ideas. Just be careful you don't 'the bug' and start wanting more and more of it Thanks for the replies gents, great stuff! I'll start looking through the links you've posted, exactly what I needed. Some great kit there Doomlord, having been obsessed with home cinema stuff for ages, I think it's time to move on to the old stuff, I've no doubt the bug is already taking hold, my bookmarks are full of reel to reel players, turntables and valve amps! Thanks again all. I love the idea of putting together some beautiful classic equipment.
Click to expand Last edited: Dec 31, How much value do you place on the aesthetic? Some older kit has wonderful aesthetics, but lesser sound quality e. Transcriptors Reference turntable as seen in Clockwork Orange. Best wishes, Charlie. Thanks guys, some excellent suggestions and quite a few already on my list.
I'm British but I'm looking for stuff to take to a place I have in Sweden, so a mix of British and European would be exactly what I'm after. Charlie, I've asked myself the same question regarding aesthetic, I have to say that I need a balance, a stunningly beautiful piece of design that sounds bad won't cut it, it's performance first. I want the best of both worlds but obviously within my budget! Moon on a stick would also be great! Have a good evening all. Mat, How big is your room in Sweden and what do you like listening to?
An alternative would be Avantgarde Solos, but they rarely come onto the used market. Charlie Room is bigish at 40m2 and sounds amazing with a cheap make-do system I'm using at the moment so I'm excited about getting something good together. Music taste is not really exotic, having just turned 40 I have a mass of early Stones, Dylan, back to early blues, masses of acoustic stuff from all eras and more recently I'm getting in to classical.
I have no neighbours close enough to matter so I'm looking for quality, volume and a nice single malt! Thanks for the great suggestions, I'm going to do some more research. Cheers Mat. Mat Big space. Go for a pair of Avantgardes. You'll need stacks of volume to fill that space. I bought a pair of these for my brother. They sound stunning in his room on the Isle of Man, which is a bit bigger about 50m2 than your room in Sweden. Thanks Charlie, I'll take a look at the Solos, the Duos look incredible!
They would suit the room, I have some nice classic scandinavian furniture so would fit really well, if they sound as good as they look then I'm going to see what I can find.
Mat, You might get a pair of used Duos at the top end of your budget. You'll need a quiet i. They are ruthless at exposing poor sources and noisy amplifier circuits. If you are keen on the Duos, then probably a decent SS amplifier would fit in with your budget. You won't be able to afford a top class valve amp and the Duos.
If you hear the Duos, you'll be smitten. Where do you live? I'm in Cheltenham - you're most welcome to have a listen. He sometimes has used pairs of Duos for sale and he will deliver anywhere in Europe.
He might even be prepared to go to Sweden to set them up. The Duos are very cool, but they aren't exactly 'classic' Buying good-quality classic speakers is a challenge, because they are one area where improvements tend to be continuous and newer is almost always better than older. Since you want to enjoy some valve amps then it seems probably the best classic British speakers would be some of the big Tannoys with the 15" drivers and big cabinets, like the Westminster Royals or GRFs etc.
Can't see them fitting in with scandinavian interior design though And they might well be rather pricey too Morning all and Happy New Year. Ok, so the Aventgarde may be a little over my budget! I'll continue to keep an eye out but they're off my realistic list and on to my, "one day" list! So after looking through some amazing kit, I absolutely love the Dieter Rams era Braun design, does anyone have any views on the quality of this stuff?
It might well be worth hunting down a pair of his version of the Quad ESL The PCS5 turntable looks beautiful with that base. Clearly influential I think in Japan For horn speakers Klipschorns are classic american designs Don't expect much bass if you do go that route though LV did make a big horn sub once Classic can mean good I think you'll find greater limitations on max SPL and bass depth, both important considerations for a big room, servicing and parts become serious and expensive issues, and often nostalgia is what gives many classic items their status, more than outright performance I love the look of Sony's original ES gear, for instance.
Maybe trying to find a pair of Technics horn-speakers might be a fun challenge? Something like the SB-Es? They're findable, at least in Japan. McFaber Well-known Member. Don't say you were never warned..
AC1 Preamplifier
The Transcriptor turntable. Indeed, it still looks futuristic today. The linear tracking tonearm of the Beogram turntable. The cartridge looked like the nose of the Concorde supersonic jetliner. The cartridge was styled like the nose of the Concorde supersonic jetliner which made the Beogram look even more avant-garde and very desirable.

This was in the mid 70s, if I remember correctly. I sold it on after about 5 years - I will always regret making such a foolish decision…. Unobrtusive and not normally noticed. Until the perfect affordable invisible system is made, I will stick with my current system until I win the premium bond jackpot. I really wanted one of these so much way back in the 70s, but never managed to get one. An early version, because I believe that later versions unfortunately substituted Perspex for Glass. I had to look lecson and the yamaha tape deck up. Both are very interesting and good looking. The yamaha brings to mind the interior of an alfa as to how all the buttons are arranged - no bad thing! I always thought a pair of these would look great and incidentally sound good in the right room - but a big room, as they are large!

Yes, we really do get people trying to order items from here at prices from 40 years ago, so we have to put this. As of Apr We are using the Hifi Year Book as we have the whole set So as this is our page, we'll scan the Books for ones we reckon are interesting or noteworthy. To list all amps of minor wattage after the Valve era isn't going to happen, go buy the books.

Over the past few years, the resurgence of interest in audio equipment manufactured some three, four or even five decades ago has been nothing short of astonishing. Equipment that 10 years ago would have ended up on some come-and-collect-it-for-nothing website, is suddenly worth hundreds of pounds. It was the postman who had alerted her to check out previous sales prices on e-bay to determine it's value, if any. Well Posty, you're dog-meat in my book Whether it's the resurgence of interest in vinyl that has had a hand in this price frenzy, or the extortionate cost of some brand new gear, I know not. For myself, I've learned never to underestimate the performance of vintage or classic audio from companies like Denon, Technics, Yamaha, Sony - the list is truly endless.

The world was a different place back in Colour television sets were bleeding-edge technology, quartz digital watches were for millionaires, and computers only appeared in sci-fi films like A Space Odyssey. And so it was — after a house and a car, a sound system was the largest purchase people made. It was happenstance that he was introduced to Bob, via a company they both had worked with in differing capacities.
