Being independent means that the Pro Audio DSP team have been able to carve their own path, focussing their considerable combined experience into just a single plug-in processor, the Dynamic Spectrum Mapper, or DSM for short. Multiband compressors are nothing new, but the DSM uses a continuous Threshold Spectrum and it comes directly from the track you're mastering we call this "Capture". This means the music gets compressed evenly at all frequencies. It's so smooth and invisible to the ear that it doesn't sound like it's doing anything! This revolutionary idea of capturing the Threshold Spectrum directly from the track eliminates the conventional process of tweaking frequency bands and thresholds by hand, in a time-consuming, error-prone, and enormously enjoyable activity. We're sorry to ruin the fun. Having said that, of course we provide a way to make local adjustments to the Threshold Spectrum using the drag handles or the knobs on the bottom row. DSM V2 is one of those quasi-magical plugins, destined to become a studio classic. Flexible, powerful and effective. Their debut - and thus far only - product was the highly impressive Dynamic Spectrum Mapper, described by the developers as a "prismatic compressor". For the uninitiated, DSM is something like a multiband compressor: it splits the incoming signal into frequency bands and uses compression and limiting to sculpt the sound. However, DSM differs from your average multiband compressor in two key ways. For starters, it uses many more bands, resulting in far greater detail in the midrange and top end. Most unusually, before you start processing with DSM, you need to first analyse a 'source' signal, which the software will then use as a virtual 'reference', pushing the processed signal closer towards its dynamic and tonal qualities. Since DSM works with dynamic as well as spectral information, there's plenty of scope for its application.

Sounds like no Time Lord should be without one! A fingerprint EQ, such as Logic's Match EQ or TC's Assimilator, then compares the target spectrum with that of the audio actually being processed and adjusts the filter bank so that the average spectrum of the current audio matches that of the target. DSM operates somewhat differently, as it uses the target analysis curve to set the thresholds for compressors in each band, so that gain reduction occurs in each frequency band only when the current audio level exceeds the target curve threshold in that band.

A no-frills GUI displays familiar controls like input and output gain, threshold, ratio, attack, decay, knee, and stereo link. A graphical Threshold Curve animation and two pairs of meters give visual cues to the action. This snapshot is then used to automatically set the relative thresholds of the numerous frequency-specific compressor bands. For example, if a signal contains a lot of energy in the 5 kHz band, but little in the 10 kHz band at the moment of capture, the resulting Threshold Curve will skew higher at 5 kHz and lower at 10 kHz.
