This will form the base of our discussion. Op-amps are among the most widely used electronic devices today, being used in a vast array of consumer, industrial, and scientific devices. Op-amps may be packaged as components, or used as elements of more complex integrated circuits.
We will discuss the application of op-amp as a clipper. What is an op-amp? In electronics, a clipper is a device designed to prevent the output of a circuit from exceeding a predetermined voltage level without distorting the remaining part of the applied waveform.
A clipper circuit is known as a wave shaping circuit. Waveshaping circuits are commonly used in digital computers and communication such as TV and FM receiver. Waveshaping technique include clipping and clamping. The diode works as an ideal diode switch because when ON ,the voltage drop across the diode is divided by the open loop gain of the op-amp. When OFF reverse biased , the diode is an open circuit. The output voltage has the portions of the positive half cycles above Vref clipped off.
It opens the feedback loop and op- amp operates open loop. The op-amp alternates between open loop off and closed loop operation as the D1 is turned off and on respectively. For this reason the op-amp used must be high speed and preferably compensated for unity gain. The negative clipper clips off the negative parts of the input signal below the reference voltage.
A practical application of a clipper is to prevent an amplified speech signal from overdriving a radio transmitter in above figure. Over driving the transmitter generates spurious radio signals which causes interference with other stations. The clipper is a protective measure. A sine wave may be squared up by overdriving a clipper. Another clipper application is the protection of exposed inputs of integrated circuits.
It clips either positive or negative half wave of the input. Total views 6, On Slideshare 0. From embeds 0. Number of embeds 9. Downloads Shares 0.

Diode Clippers and Clampers
When i measured the output it seemed to be clipping in that it suddenly levels off at a consistent level. Ask question asked 6 years ago. Clipper circuit using op amp If an input is sine wave to distorted square wave type waveform. If voltage is ac then its phase also changes. Simulate this circuit schematic created using circuitlab. A circuit that removes positive parts of the input signal can be formed by using an op amp with a rectifier diode.

Diode Clippers – An overview of Clipping Circuits

There are many electronic circuits that are used for signal transmission. It can be an amplifier or modulator or it might be anything related to the signal strength enhancement. These devices are known for accepting the signal at a certain defined range of voltages. If the signal applied has an amplitude value greater than that of the range described this results in distortion or it may destroy the components present in the circuit. There is another problem related to signals that are their levels.
What are Clippers and Clampers & Their Working
The major difference between clipper and clamper is that clipper is a limiting circuit which limits the output voltage while clamper is a circuit which shifts the DC level of output voltage. The clipper and clamper circuits are exactly opposite to each other regarding their working principle. Another significant difference between clipper and clamper is the shape of the output waveform. The voltage which is clipped by clipper can assume various shapes, but the voltage obtained by clamper circuit does not alter in shape. Clipper is crucial when we want to modify the amplitude of the voltage. Clipping of signal amplitude is required in some application in which components cannot withstand the high magnitude of the voltage.

wave shaping circuits using operational amplifiers
While the application most commonly associated with diodes is rectification for power supplies and radio frequency detection, diodes are also used for clipping and clamping signals. Clipping is simply bounding a signal to limited amplitude. Clamping is shifting the center of an AC signal to a different value.
In this tutorial, we will learn about Diode Clippers and Clampers. Even though rectification is the basic application of diodes, Clippers and Clamper circuits are equally important. This tutorial gives an in-depth information about Diode Clippers and Clampers. Most of the electronic circuits like amplifiers, modulators and many others have a particular range of voltages at which they have to accept the input signals. Any of the signals that have an amplitude greater than this particular range may cause distortions in the output of the electronic circuits and may even lead to damage of the circuit components. As most of the electronic devices work on a single positive supply, the input voltage range would also be on the positive side.
In the previous chapter, we discussed about clippers. Now, let us discuss about other type of wave shaping circuits, namely clampers. A clamper is an electronic circuit that produces an output, which is similar to the input but with a shift in the DC level. In other words, the output of a clamper is an exact replica of the input. Hence, the peak to peak amplitude of the output of a clamper will be always equal to that of the input. Clampers are used to introduce or restore the DC level of input signal at the output. There are two types of op-amp based clampers based on the DC shift of the input.
