They perform perfectly with everything I've put through them and I've got some pretty eclectic and demanding stuff! They are clear, warm yet fairly neutral and sound huge even though my living room is pretty large. Cosmetically they look good too, especially with the grilles removed, though this should be a secondary consideration to anyone serious about their music. They are the best… Read Full Review.

I no longer use cd as I play through laptop or ipod cable, so don't need a cd player. I've been told that spending loads won't necessarily produce the best sound. Alan Taylor 02 Jan Ah the memories. AndyE9 02 Jan Pursued by a bear 02 Jan In reply to mikeconway: And your budget is? Brownie 02 Jan In reply to Brownie: nice one, I'll check them out. In reply to Brownie: I have this amp and is still going strong after 20 yrs. The sound is much better through the CD player though gave up my turntable a few years ago.

The vinyl is still in the cupboard but not sure whether to get a turntable or transfer it onto digital format.

In reply to Alan Taylor: Thanks Alan. I'll see what the reviews say. In reply to mikeconway: what's your budget for turntable arm cartridge? Thrudge 04 Jan In reply to mikeconway: eBay is the way to go. It's not a complete list by any means, but they're all long standing manufacturers with a reputation for quality at the budget end of the market.

If you want to buy new, Richer Sounds have some very good deals. Have fun. Fluvial 04 Jan In reply to mikeconway: Shame you live in London I have some pretty tasty gear sat next to me that could do with a home for the right price Cheap Nad turntable Marantz Amp Techniques Radio amp Aiwa CD player Aiwa Double Cassette deck Fisher Speakers Not worth diddly squat nowadays Some of this is pretty old in terms of early 's equipment and all in good working order it comes on an Ariston target table thingy majigg I'm not posting it mind you!

BigBrother 04 Jan David Hooper 05 Jan The first 12" single I put on just sounded amazing. Im saving up for a Michell Gyrodec. Like a previous poster stated crap in Have fun choosing. Pursued by a bear 06 Jan Jimbo W 06 Jan In reply to David Hooper: I've got the Michell version of the old Hydraulic Reference, which needs to be repaired, but which I'm quite looking forward to getting done.

I reckon the gyrodec looks awesome, have you auditioned one? By all accounts I've read so far, this beats most passive pre's hands down. Alex Slipchuk 06 Jan In reply to mikeconway: I'd strongly advise on rega planner. Get the wall bracket as well. The turntable has no suspension. I have had mine for 20 years. I originally had a nad amp and mission speakers. Only 20 watts per channel but louder that my mates Kenwood 1k stack.

It's audiolab and linn speakers these days. But still the rega. If you have analogue recorded non dig remastered vinyl.

You'll notice a massive difference in round quality over modern mp3. Enjoy and let up all know how you get on. In reply to Pursued by a bear: thanks very much for putting this list together for me, decision decisions In reply to Jimbo W: its great to see the combinations that people have got set up. I'm assuming that you are all happy with your set ups. Good luck with getting your passive pre amp in place Jimbo. Does that mean I need to consider how i connect an i-pod into the system too.

Should it go into some special dock first. Apologies for my ignorance on the subject. I am learning all the time. Pursued by a bear 07 Jan Jimbo W 07 Jan It sounds absolutely excellent.

In reply to mikeconway: Cambridge Audio A SE amp is excellent, but you'll need a pre-amp to connect it to a record player, this will add to the cost of the cables needed as well. I'll be getting a RP1 turntable when I have enough room to put it somewhere! In reply to mikeconway: Oh, and some of the Infinity speakers are a bargain. In reply to fried: Mmm. Just remembered I didn't check whether the amps I suggested had the very necessary phono stage.

Oops, must try harder. I'll have another go when I'm next on a PC rather than a phone. In reply to mikeconway: re your ipod the only way to get "decent" sound is to buy music in formats which are compressed as little as possible eg. FLAC then connect the ipod with a good quality cable to your amplifier.

Dave Todd 08 Jan In reply to mikeconway: Hi Mike In case you're interested - I've got an old HiFi which used to be my pride and joy but has spent the last 10 years or so being used less and less.

I've finally reconciled myself with selling it. Feel free to PM me if you're interested in any of it! Amp: Onix OA Speakers: Kef Q Speaker stands and good quality cabling. Pursued by a bear 09 Jan Thrudge 09 Jan In reply to Pursued by a bear: marantz is what I'll be getting, or the if I can find a good deal.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about the mordaunt short aviano 8 speakers so will probably go for them unless I can be convinced otherwise.

I recently learned about sound cards needed to convert the digital information coming from i-tunes, spotify etc. Can I get away with a basic reasonably priced sound card? In reply to mikeconway: Or even the soundcard already in your computer?! In reply to Dave Todd: Hi Dave, I'm interested in your turntable but unable to decide what to do yet especially as posting the thing could be a pain Thanks for the offer though. In reply to mikeconway: Ah, I see.

There is already a perfectly good soundcard in your PC which will have an analogue out line out or headphones , but it may be susceptible to noise if you want the best performance as it's probably not all that well screened.

The advantage of using a USB sound card is that the device will be physically separated from the electrically noisy PC and can use a screened enclosure and perhaps separate power supply. Invariably they will be better electrically that the built-in soundcard but if your source is compressed music from Spotify or iTunes, then I'd say it would be a questionable investment. But then I'm deaf and use sound cards for building radios anyway so my perspective is different You could always try the existing sound card and see how it goes.

That was helpful. I reckon I'll go for the audiolab a instead. This was a very helpful starting point though. Brownie 14 Jan In reply to mikeconway: Cheers Mike I've got a denon se amp at home with the dual audiofile deck - this bigger amp is a bit beefier on the base - not everyone's taste but good with reggae etc, I'd not mentioned it as they rarely come up second-hand. Is one on auction now funnily enough though.

But get the one you like the sound of; everyone's ears are different and different amps match different speakers. I still favour older speakers as they have bigger diameter cones only really good base.

Well known in its own country, the British loudspeaker manufacturer Mordaunt-Short is perhaps less of a household word among American audio enthusiasts. In its more than twenty years of existence, the company has earned a reputation for quality and value in the British audio market, but it has had only sporadic distribution in this country. The woofer cone, formed of paper, has a rubber surround, long-throw suspension, and high-temperature voice coil. The tweeter's fundamental dome "break-up" resonance is said to be at 23, Hz.
