Valve amp reccomendations

Lindsay Gearhead Posts: Just a bit of an update on a recent experiment with the GU50 which I can't seem to get away from. The bias supply was unable to restrain the GU50's when I had a quick attempt to check on the sound.

I stripped the pre-amp and replaced it with a simple 6U8 with the triode then pentode, no tone stack. I built a voltage doubler to take care of the bias, and now have 70V's available. The GU50 screens must never exceed V's and my supply was putting out so a regulator was required. The power transformer had three available tap for the HT, which I selected the highest. The forth tap separate winding powers the screen and pre-amp. I have a bit of hum and hash and my screen regulator isn't behaving correctly.

The regulator is meant to output mA but was giving up with only a 25mA load so I need to investigate that further. As an experiment valves are cheap I connected the un-regulated supply to the screens, V under load and achieved an output of 25Ws with the screens only dropping a small amount.

The 3K OT load produce slightly less power than the 2K3 which tends to agree with the consensus of a 5K load Sound testing with guitar, it needs a tone control. Clean is very clear and defined but as the volume increases it sounds too hi-fi like. Anyway, just a learning experience and practice driving my test tools new distortion meter FYI. Kagliostro Gearhead Posts: With those tubes you need the distortion to be produced on the preamp, you need a preamp with "a character" A single GU50 is happy to work with Anode v mA idle G2 v 3.

Thanks Franco, Did you build that amp as described. I would not get anywhere near those figures with the voltages you posted. My 18W output is with the amp at full power. My supply voltages are a lot higher too with on the anode and the screens at V which is the actual tested limit Wavebourne although the data sheet states max V. I found reducing the screen voltage really drops the output significantly.

I haven't actually measured the screen draw yet as I need to work out why my regulator is dying under load. What do you mean "Signal for maximum output 17V"? I've solved the hum issues with heater balance resistors and re-positioned a few wires around the pre-amp. Thanks Lindsay and a few pics Franco, thanks for the info.

I've been working on this a bit further. I couldn't work out why my regulator was cutting out under load. Turns out I hadn't filtered the screen supply adequately and had a bit of AC which was fooling the regulator. A cap fixed that issue. I added a bit of NFB -6dB to the pentode cathode. I had messed around with various bypass values on both pre-amp stages but didn't really like the harsh grit it provided.

Power output now runs at 18W clean and 28W at full power. All in all I'm happy how it's turned out and the tone is okay, but like you say the valve is suited to pre-amp distortion. A preamp for your SE?? Grazie Franco, My amp sounds similar to the links you posted, not as much gain though, but when boosted Tube Screamer the same cutting drive, very sharp.

It's not bad, just not really my thing. My mate Kombi played it yesterday and came to the same conclusion. Like I said earlier it was really just an experiment to use those valves and the fact that I haven't seen anyone else build a guitar amp SE with them. Lots of Hi-Fi stuff out there but no guitar. I did look at those data sheets but the anode characteristic chart is very compressed around the HT level I'm using.

I forgot to mention I did experiment with various load impedances from 1 to around 5 and found 2K3 to give the best power and sound. That said, I hadn't discovered the fault with my screen supply when I did those tests and it was sagging badly i. I'd love to have an amp I was completely happy with using the GU At this point in SE it isn't really a keeper.

To get around the pre-amp based distortion requirement I may have to look at a higher gain design like a modded JCM My mate is going to wind me a multi-tap OT to try and find the best load. If all is well I'll build a better pre-amp. Pages: [ 1 ] Go Up.

By henry , August 26, in Talkin' Tubes. Does not produce as good a square wave as good as some of my other tubes builds but sounds good to me. I do not know who the designer of schematic was. I honestly do not remember being it was a few years ago but I want to say in the neighborhood of 5 or 6 watts.

Between the amplifier and the transceiver, it is desirable to install a matching device. A well-matched amplifier with a transceiver with a small excitation.

Linear Amplifier with GU50 450W (ГУ-50) 27-28 MHz

The tube square power amplifier is assembled on 4 GU lamps. It is connected in parallel according to the scheme with common grids, and is designed to operate in the ranges of 80, 40, 30, 20, 15, and 10 m. If the amplifier is installed according to the requirements for such devices, it is not necessary to neutralize the lamp passage capacity. The maximum output power of the amplifier is - W.

Oh no, there's been an error

The design and build quality was for Russian mobile military equipment. The knob, or handle, on the top and moulded glass key allow for rapid replacement in the field. See the GU50 mounting link above for a probably housing. Currently this valve has been used in hi-fi audio amplifiers, both in single-ended and push-pull designs.
