I usually use the little utility beep installed on many systems. This command will try different approaches to create a system sound. This only works if the calling shell's standard output is currently directed to a terminal device of some sort; if not, the beep will produce no sound and might even cause unwanted corruption in whatever file the output is directed to. There are other ways to cause a beeping noise. A third approach is to connect to your X display and send it a bell command. This does not depend on a Unix terminal device, but does of course require an X display. NOTE: This solution emits beeps from the speakers , not the motherboard.
How do I make my pc speaker beep
A PC speaker generates waveforms using the programmable interval timer , an Intel or chip. Since it is active before the graphics card , it can be used to communicate "beep codes" related to problems that prevent the much more complex initialization of the graphics card to take place. Usually, different error codes will be signaled by specific beeping patterns, such as e. These patterns are specific to the BIOS manufacturer and are usually documented in the technical manual of the motherboard. The PC speaker was often used in very innovative ways to create the impression of polyphonic music or sound effects within computer games of its era, such as the LucasArts series of adventure games from the mids, using swift arpeggios. However, because the method used to reproduce PCM was very sensitive to timing issues, these effects either caused noticeable sluggishness on slower PCs, or sometimes failed completely on faster PCs that is, significantly faster than the program was originally developed for. Also, it was difficult for programs to do much else, even update the display, during the playing of such sounds.

What does BIOS beep sound mean?
Discussion in ' Computer Hardware ' started by iheartmods , Oct 6, Joined: Aug 8, Messages: 1, Hey forum, I'm kinda at my wits end with this project so I'm looking for suggestions on what to try next. The power comes on, I get lights and fans but that's it. I have a hunch that this could be a ground out issue of which I will investigate tomorrow. I also plan to try 'brown boxing' the board by taking the board out and trying known good components if the ground out investigation produces nothing.
Why is my PC beeping at me?
Sometimes there's nothing worse than trying to boot up your PC only to be greeted by a series of mysterious beeps. Though if your motherboard is dead , all bets are off. Sometimes it's as simple as improperly seated RAM. Whatever the case, the codes are there to let you know that something is wrong so you can get on your way to diagnosing and fixing the problem. It's important to note that the motherboard maker is not necessarily the same as the BIOS maker, so it's best to consult your manual as the codes can vary. And, unfortunately, there isn't a standardized beep code regardless of what BIOS firmware is in your machine. But here's a general idea of how you can figure out what beep code your computer is making when it tries to POST.

However, if the computer fails the POST, the computer may generate a beep code telling the user the source of the problem. If your computer has an irregular POST or a beep code not mentioned below, follow the POST troubleshooting steps to determine the failing hardware component.
