Bush was president, four of five Whittier City Council members will be Republicans once Jessica Martinez, a school teacher, who won Tuesday in District 1, is sworn into office. Council member Henry Bouchot is the lone Democrat. Martinez, an educator, will succeed Councilman Josue Alvarado, a Democrat who chose not to run for reelection but rather seek a state Assembly seat. Alvarado placed fourth. Martinez also ran for the same seat and received the most votes but now must face a runoff, most likely against Democrat Lisa Calderon in the district that is considered safe for Democrats.
Barbara Stone, chairwoman of the southeast chapter of the Los Angeles County Lincoln Clubs, a Republican Party fundraising group, finds it ironic that actions the state took, such as requiring districts and moving the election to even years increase turnout, resulted in the election of three Republicans to the council. Former Whittier Councilman Owen Newcomer, a Democrat, said sometimes there are differences between Democrats and Republicans but not always.
At one time, Whittier was a Republican city — it was the hometown of the late Richard Nixon after all — with a majority of the electorate registered Republican who had voted for Republican presidents going back at least since Nixon was elected in Party registration among Whittier voters also went Democratic for the first time ever. Since then, every Democratic presidential candidate has won in Whittier, and Democrats now outnumber Republicans by nearly a margin.
