Acoustic Energy AE1 Active Loudspeakers
The standmount loudspeaker has been around in some guise or another since We tested the AE1 Classic way back in Issue 51, and it had already been around for decades then. This new AE1 Active model is the first to feature built-in amplifiers. The rise of the high-performance, reasonably priced headphone amplifier with line outputs — and the rise of smaller power amplifier modules — has made the affordable active speaker a possibility.
The magnetic grille and the curved cabinet make the loudspeaker look less intimidating The way an Acoustic Energy AE1 has to behave falls into very fixed patterns, thanks in part to that long, long history. You could never make a pipe-and-slippers type sound with an AE1 because too many people would complain that you threw out the baby with the bathwater.
Back then, no-one really knew much about cone break-up, and still fewer knew how to combat it, so the original AE1 came with a bit of a zing to it, something that was only resolved by using it with behemoth amplifiers. Partnering the AE1 Active is easy Depending on the distance from preamp to speakers, XLRs or phono jacks might be preferable.
In comparison, all other things being equal, I mildly preferred the single-ended option, but the difference was not so substantial as to make it a significant influence in the decision-making process.
Acoustic Energy AE1 Active review
Having set up shop 30 years ago, the first speaker that Acoustic Energy made has gone on to become its most famous and enduring. The original AE1 was the little speaker that could. In other words, it excelled where the seductively mid-neutral old-timer was most obviously compromised — namely in its bass power and extension, loudness and dynamic range. As such, the upstart from the Cotswolds became a firm favourite with the pro audio sector and audiophiles that appreciated what was, at the time, a unique skill set. With its small anodised spun alloy cone bass unit, alloy dome tweeter and an enclosure that felt as if it had been hewn from stone, the AE1 was designed for hard driving and demanded muscular solid-state amplifiers.

Almost all of the products reviewed here on Simplifi , and on other corners of the SoundStage! Network, are fairly new to market—in most cases, less than one year old. And quite often, our reviews are of products that are brand new to market. The AE1 Active has been on my radar for quite a while. My curiosity was piqued earlier this year when a reader from Russia wrote to me, saying he was downsizing his hi-fi, and seriously considering a pair of AE1 Actives to replace his Zu Audio floorstanding speakers and tube amps. Sign me up! The AE1 Active is among the most beautifully finished speakers I have ever seen. My review sample had the high-gloss walnut veneer finish, which was applied to all surfaces. The warm, brown wood veneer was lustrous and impeccable, with a pronounced grain that waterfalled gracefully around the rounded top and bottom edges.

In hi-fi, tradition can mean a lot of boxes and a lot of clutter - but it can also mean finely tuned system-matching and plenty of scope for upgrading. It means versatility and, often, better overall performance.
