Watt's the Deal? There is no such thing as a perfect amplifier. All audiophiles and their associated equipment have specific needs, but in each case there is such a thing as a best amplifier - the one that makes you happy. First Watt exists because I wanted to explore a variety of amplifier designs in what I think of as neglected areas - amplifiers that might not fit into the mainstream and are probably not appropriate to my more commercial enterprise, Pass Labs.

Click to expand My understanding, including from a personal email exchange with Pass himself, is that he designed the original MOSFET-based 5x00 series just as he'd done the original bipolar-based 5x5 series.
And as others have said, he had no part in the modifications made for the mk ii versions of some of those models. My local tech had completely gone through my and my preamp and replaced tons of caps. It is on my list to get it serviced one of these days, though, as those caps will need replacing eventually.

Built like tanks, 25 years old and running strong. Transparent, that's the bottom line. Kudos for his contributions to the DIY crowd!
Not all distortion is equal. Thus it's possible that an amp with higher overall distortion could not only sound better, but be more transparent and true to the source psychoacoustically. By this I'm not talking about adding distortion just to make it "sound better", but an engineering tradeoff. For example something like, we chose this design B over A because even though B's total distortion is slightly higher, it has lower odd order distortion and IMD.

Nelson on the creative use of second harmonic distortion and negative phase. Joined Mar 5, Messages Likes It was my first beginning to end DIY project, and it worked to my shock and amazement. Going beyond the 1 volt 'speed limit' into higher gains obviously increases the distortion profile.
However, it is unapologetically designed specifically to create this second order harmonic effect. The question is how much? H2 at dB , less or more? Or maybe dB is a good compromise to ALL kind of recordings. Last edited: Sep 24, Batty Member. Speakers are 92dB sensitivity. It requires 2. Julf Major Contributor Forum Donor. Well , here and there these questions are popping on Diyaudio. PL amplifier; this tutorial will address that. Take in account that older PL amps are having small mosfet based output stage biasing generator , while later ones are having TL generator iteration — with some specimens finished without NTC compensation — exactly as amp shown in pictures. If not ,and you need some info regarding earlier models, contact me either through blog e-mail thingie , or on diyaudio.

That would be Nelson Pass. Nelson Pass grew up in northern California, where he attended UC Davis and earned a degree in physics. Most audiophiles came to know Pass through his work at the Threshold Corporation, where he resided from until , when he founded Pass Laboratories. He holds seven audio patents, six of them for amplifier circuits. Among his early accomplishments were the "first dynamically biased class-A circuit" , "a fully cascode audio power amplifier" , and the famous "Stasis" amplifiers -- models that are still highly sought on the used market. The popular Aleph series of amplifiers used single-ended, class-A circuits. At www. In fact, such has been his support of the build-it-yourself hobbyist that his pet name among that DIY community is "Papa. There are a few exceptions, however, and the early work of Nelson Pass is at the top of that list. Below is a catalog of some of his more famous designs, and what was technically special about them.

I've been using tubes for years and was beginning to think about solid state to rid me of tube nuisances and expenses now that I am retired. I am listening for hours each day and replacing tubes is just too expensive.

Decent weather so I managed to get a lot of stuff done at home, but — as usual — not as much as I wanted to. However, when that progress will be turned into something I can actually show off here is an entirely different discussion.

This being the entertainment industry, I hope everyone is having a good time. Feedback is very large subject, and I am going to limit myself to some simple tutorial comments and a discussion of phenomena associated with complexity in distortion created by nonlinear gain stages, negative feedback, and the audio signal. Taken singly, these phenomena seem simple enough, but when they interact, they create distortions out of proportion to what you expect from the specifications found in product brochures. There are linear and non-linear forms of distortion. Tone controls are a good example of circuits with linear distortion. Nonlinear distortions are those which add new frequency components to the original signal, either as harmonic multiples of the original frequencies or as sidebands resulting from their non-linear interaction between the original frequencies. Nonlinearities are often deliberately created in musical instruments themselves, but they are unwanted in music reproduction.
First watt j2 vs aleph j So this is a killer deal. I need an affordable preamp that's low noise to drive a Pass Aleph J amp. I am bi-amping, using an Aleph-J on the tweeters; but I tried with just the F6, and was. You'd probably have to grab a used Aleph J to stay closer to budget, or a clone for under.
I to you will remember it! I will pay off with you!
I think this is a wonderful thought.
