As he stated in a recent interview with The Guardian , the German director's celluloid heroes have always been those who achieve the greatest spectacles, rather than those with the greatest amount of art-house kudos. Finally, our own Peter Bradshaw says: "Roland Emmerich's great big CGI blockbuster lumbers along like one of the woolly mammoths that roam across the screen. There are some very good setpieces, but this is just too derivative, and particularly looks pinched from Mel Gibson's far superior Apocalypto.

"10,000 BC" a mammoth at worldwide box office
The film is set in the prehistoric era and depicts the journeys of a prehistoric tribe of mammoth hunters. The film was a box office hit, but consistently regarded by professional critics as Emmerich's worst film, as well as one of the worst films of the year. Circa 10, BC, a hunter-gatherer tribe called the Yagahl live in the Ural Mountains and survive by hunting woolly mammoths. The tribe is led by a hunter who has killed a mammoth single-handedly and earned the White Spear, and venerate Old Mother, an elderly neanderthal with shamanistic powers. The mammoths begin to dwindle, and the village chief finds a young girl named Evolet who survived a massacre of her village, perpetrated by what Old Mother calls "four-legged demons" who will come when "the Yagahl go on their last hunt". The chief does not believe the prophecy and leaves to find the mammoths.

News News. And really … how many actors can convincingly portray a caveman romance anyway? Them are big rawhide slippers to fill. The first chuckle comes with the upbeat tenor narration by Hollywood veteran Omar Sharif. All the warrior has to do is drop one of the giant mammoths. Still, the tribe is hungry and must kill one, so all the young men, clad in loin cloths and bulging muscles, get into position with their spears to spook the herd. They drive the herd into a narrow valley where others can throw a net over a straggler. Along the journey, which begins in what looks like the Andes or Himalayas and inconceivably takes the travelers across the African desert, the rescuers meet another ancient tribe whose people have been taken as slaves. They also meet a saber-toothed tiger, and of course, God.

Movie Review: 10,000 B.C.
You have to hand it to him, Roland Emmerich thinks big. After the sci-fi extravaganzas Stargate and Independence Day, the historical epic The Patriot and the environmental disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow, he has set out to create his own mythology, no less. A fiercely good looking, inventively-clad cast interact among dizzying layers of CGI, visual and sound effects to make a preposterous prehistoric adventure quest that is undeniably spectacular. You can feel the earth and your teeth shake, rattle and roll when the mighty herds of massive woolly mamoths stampede through the dwarfed company of vulnerable but athletic spear carriers. What is more embarrassingly enjoyable, guilty fun is the brash daftness run rampant.

If anything, time confuses the issue. Yet even as the story begins, the old ways seem to be dying out, as the Yagahl, a tribe of snuffleupagus hunters who favor extensions in their hair and eschew contractions in their speech, prepare for their last hunt. The wooden acting, the bad dialogue, the extravagantly illogical special effects may well, in time, look pleasingly cheap and hokey, at which point the true entertainment value of the film will at last be realized. Meanwhile back in the present, there is an awful lot of high-toned mumbo-jumbo to sit through.

Costume dramas that give you an up-close-and-personallook at some musty but meaningful period when life was tough, but big thingswere happening? Well, givedirector Roland Emmerich credit for attempting a new record in rewinding theclock. Indeed, the world these heroes occupy seems so riddled withmalevolence, you can understand the incentive somebody might have to flood theplace, and wash away the general pestilence. What are mammoth herdsdoing up there, anyway?
This story is about a tribe of hunters called the Yagahl who hunt wholly mammoths called mannacks. The tribe finds a young girl named Evolet and the Old Mother seer says Evolet is part of the prophecy that will help to free her people, along with the man that loves her. D'leh is a young hunter who falls in love with Evolet. He tells her, she will always be with him and points to the brightest star in the sky. D'leh yearns to win the white spear and Evolet's hand in marriage. He wins the white spear after accidentally killing the mannack and gives it back.
