Specifically the X We're on a VERY tight budget. I saw these new Crowns and thought My first thought is, if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is shie. I believe they're made in China. I don't think everything that comes out of China is crap, but??
I am apprehensive. I've looked at the specs, and it seems like a really bare bones stripped down power amp. No bells and whistles at all It is heavy compared to to new designs today. Haven't seen any reviews yet, so I thought I'd see if anyone on here had tried them out yet??
I know watts don't determine loudness but why would you need 1kW for monitors? I've been nervous about Crown amps after getting burned by a CE That should be more than enough for monitors, I have two GX7's for my monitors. IMHO, if you need more than watts for a monitor you don't need a more powerful amplifier, you need an audiologist. Regarding the need for w. Great boxes, but not very efficient.
They're designed to handle at least w. We've been feeding them with only half that It's mainly a headroom issue. We wouldn't be turning that w up all the way!. I'm aware that w would not make things twice as loud, but there would be a noticeable volume increase. Funny you mention the old Crown CE series. We have an old CE that been in service for 10yrs, and never failed. It's tired and noisy, but has never failed I'm going to see if our local GC will let us try one out, just to see what's what.
I use Crown amps for my band, both for the monitors and the mains; have for four years now, and I've never had an issue with the amps.
I have both the xti and xti series. Of course, I've got Furman power conditioners in every rack. That may help. Power conditioners don't do anything for power amps. The X is Wx2 at 4 ohms, not 8. I've beat the crap out of an IPR for 3 years and it's always sounded great.
