Bang and olufsen hexagon speakers

The unique wall-mounted modular design is based around a series of individual hexagonal tiles — behind each removable grille you'll find either an amplifier, smart hub, speaker or acoustic dampers — that seamlessly clip together in a series of different patterns, fabrics and colours. The result is a wall of sound both Phil Spector and Kelly Hoppen might well be proud of. Up close, the wall panels are stylish and unquestionably on-trend, although for anyone familiar the 90s TV catchphrase "I'll have a 'P' please Bob", the BeoSound Shape may stir slightly less stylish memories. At the heart of the system is the BeoSound Core connectivity hub — or tile — that enables wireless streaming from Apple Airplay, Chromecast, Spotify Connect and Bluetooth 4.

See our ethics statement. The BeoSound Shape is a wireless speaker system made up of a swarm of hexagonal panels, designed to be a quality set of speakers that fade into the background of your home. The BeoSound Core also has some wired inputs for Ethernet or line-in functionality, although its primary focus is on wireless.

My colleague Vlad Savov was able to demo the BeoSound Shape in person, and while he noted that the sound quality was good, true to its background design, the Shape seemed more meant for casual listening, not audiophile music. Designed to be easily customised into honeycomb-like patterns, the wireless wall-mounted panels can not only play or boost sound but also absorb noise to improve indoor acoustics. The BeoSound Shape system requires a minimum of six tiles, but can be scaled up as needed. It is intended for use in home or office environments. Panels are covered in wool fabric made by Danish textile brand Kvadrat. They are available in colours including brown, green, pink and dark blue — all of which can be mixed and matched.

A black cube that sits in the corner of a room will no longer suffice — a speaker should be a statement piece, akin to a piece of furniture or artwork, that elevates the room and shows your style.

Home Audio

It was the Ferrari of CD players. You might be expecting an orchestral effect, where different instruments and sound layers come individually from different tiles. At a recent demo of the Shape, this was clear when listening to lyrical songs, but even with instrumentals, each cello, drum and piano is crisp and clear cut, with sound beaming towards a spotlight just in front of the speakers. For sticklers for analogue sound, there are also ways to link up to your traditional devices, of course. The Beosound core also has functions for playing different music in different rooms, or allowing all your speakers to join together at once.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound Shape is a hexagonal wall speaker system

When buying a new piece of tech that's going to live with you for years, your primary concern is balancing price, features and future-proofing. But some products don't wave spec sheets around, instead focusing on design that complements minimalist spaces , or conceals its true function. I heard about how the mosaic speaker system is "domesticating technology" and how the peaked, many-faced design plays with light in the same way mountain ranges do at dusk. The tagline "good sound, good silence" came up at one point, but cut through the colorful, emotive pitch and you're looking at a fairly elaborate bit of kit.

Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound Shape hexagonal wireless speakers double as art décor

Johanna Grawunder is a designer and architect based in Milan and San Francisco. Her work spans a broad range of projects and scales, from architecture and interiors to limited-edition furniture and lighting for galleries in Europe and the USA. Johanna worked with Sottsass Associati from , becoming a partner in In , she opened her own studio developing a collection of lamps using repurposed and up-cycled industrial artefacts; stamped-steel earthquake brackets, extruded aluminium angles and a traffic light. Refining these iconic shapes through sandblasting, powder-coating, etching and anodising, new and unexpected forms come to light. How did arrive at light as your preferred medium?

All rights reserved. The subtly designed music system is composed of three-dimensional, upholstered hexagonal tiles that each house a specific component, that are pieced together to form a coherent system.

Hi-fi system or wall art? It looks more like beautiful wall art than a piece of technology, but it masks an extremely clever and well thought-out system that could just be the way forward for how hi-fi should look in our homes. This innovation takes a completely different approach to how a home music system should look. The BeoSound Shape system comprises identical hexagonal tiles that hide one of each hi-fi module - speaker, amplifier or acoustic damper - underneath its fabric cover. There are four speakers to one amplifier and the maximum configuration you can have is 11 amplifiers and 44 speakers. There's no limit to the number of acoustic-damper tiles you can add, and you only need one BeoSound Core for your system's wireless-streaming and connectivity features. It's wall-mountable, and the endless combination of colours and patterns available is a huge draw when it comes to building your own stylish, bespoke system.

The beautiful thing about this system is that it is modular — you can use up to 44 speakers or use just a few, or spread them out on a big room. You can even have a multi-room system. The end result is the same — you get hi-fi quality audio for the whole-room.
