Cabinet ohm mismatch

Log in or Sign up. Marshall Amp Forum. Is it safe to run x12 cabs one 8ohm the other 16ohm into a x? Adwex , May 28, It will match the imepdance pretty well if you use the in parallel to give 5. This will be perfectly fine and shouldn't give any problems. Your problem will come from the fact that power will be distributed unevenly between the cabs. The lower impedance cab will take a much higher portion of the ouput power and you run the risk of burning it up.

Also the sound wont come evenly from each cab. PaoloJM , May 28, Yeah, I have a 16 and an 8 ohm cab. I don't need a full stack at home but when I want to play rock star I use the 4 ohm setting. Ken , May 28, American Viking , May 28, PaoloJM , May 29, Ken , May 29, Joined: Mar 11, Messages: Likes Received: Didn't know about the 15 Ohm stamp.

I have not seen one of those. I see. A "16 ohm" speaker will measure around 15 ohms with a multimeter. This is the difference between DC resistance, and AC impedance. Impedance is frequency dependent. You guys can mismatch all you want, it's up to you, but the output transformer in my Marshall power amp blew due to an impedance mismatch. Do whatever you want. I'll match the impedance on my amp. Adwex , May 29, Ken , May 30, Adwex , May 30, Webslinger , May 31, Maybe I can't put it to rest, because as you mentioned, it is luck of the draw.

However, I stand by my position that if you match impedance you are perfectly safe, there is no debate there, and anyone will agree. There is also no debate whatsoever with the fact that I had to replace the output transformer in my power amp due to a impedance mismatch. Paolo is correct at least the sematics of what he said is correct that an amp set for 4 ohms into a 5.

Will it match exactly? No, but chances are "pretty good" that you will not damage anything. If anyone feels safe doing that, then more power to you, I much prefer to match impedance and actually BE safe. I don't want to replace any more transformers, especially in my somewhat rare Marshall. It is also a known fact that the output transformer in a tube amp will be less at risk if the speaker impedance is lower than the amp's setting, rather than higher the opposite is true for solid state amps so if your cab is 5.

Adwex , May 31, Im on the side of making 'em match on a tube amp, even though it might be OK not too. I would only accept a mismatch if the amp suppllier confirmed it as OK. I dont want to have to worry about it. Solid State is different, any Ohms greter than the minimum is fine, you just get less overall power output with higher Ohms speakers. The other thing is that inbetween Ohms settings such as 5. I did try that, before I decided that matching is best, and I found that the underpowered speakers were audibly swamped by the ones getting more power and might as well not have been there.

JohnH , May 31, American Viking , May 31, Just to recap my opinion on this; I'm not suggesting that mis-matching is the thing to do at all. Amps are designed with the correct load intended to be attached and that is what you should use. Adwex, I know you've had problems but I'd suggest that there were other causes for the OT failure.

Often shorting valves etc can weaking an OT slighty but it can continue operating fine for some time after. It's easy then to blame something like an impedance mismatch later on when it seems to fail for no reason.

The only reason I even mentioned that it would be ok in this case is that the mis-match is so small as to be negligable sp? JohnH, I'd mentioned the power mismatch in the speakers themselves before and I think you're spot on here.

Sound level will be different so it wont work well and 2. The speakers taking the most power may be damaged. This will be of far greater concern than a small mis-match. The Echo Link Amp is designed to give Echo owners options. Instead of settling for the sound from a couple of Echo speakers, this amp lets owners use a set of nice bookshelf speakers. Best yet, this replaces a large receiver generally needed to power speakers. The Link and the Link Amp lack a microphone, which is needed to talk to the system. These two products are, if you will, the missing link between Alexa and better sound. I used this system to test the Echo Link Amp. The sun is out and the leaves are budding. I can yell requests to the Dot from my fire pit. Like when I tested the Echo Link, I enlisted the help of another Echo product to make switching between the audio sources a bit easier.

This interdisciplinary conference explored the relationships between sound instruments and sonic cultures. Modernity has witnessed an accelerating proliferation of sound instruments—devices that allow humans to purposefully produce, capture, observe, manipulate, broadcast or otherwise interact with sound. Sound recording, playback, and listening devices are sound instruments—record, CD, and MP3 players, tape recorders, loudspeakers, headphones, etc. Radio and television sets are sound instruments, as are terrestrial and mobile telephones, as are hearing aids.

Yes, speed matters. For workgroups, part of the learning process should be to continually step back and ask how refining our view of the destination might help us progress even faster.

Gaulish was an ancient Celtic language that was spoken in parts of Continental Europe before and during the period of the Roman Empire. In the narrow sense, Gaulish was the language spoken by the Celtic inhabitants of Gaul modern-day France, Luxembourg, Belgium, most of Switzerland, Northern Italy, as well as the parts of the Netherlands and Germany on the west bank of the Rhine. In a wider sense, it also comprises varieties of Celtic that were spoken across much of central Europe " Noric " , parts of the Balkans , and Anatolia " Galatian " , which are thought to have been closely related. Together with Lepontic and the Celtiberian language spoken in the Iberian Peninsula , Gaulish helps form the geographic group of Continental Celtic languages. The precise linguistic relationships among them, as well as between them and the modern Insular Celtic languages , are uncertain and a matter of ongoing debate because of their sparse attestation.
