But hi-res headphones go further, offering up to 40kHz or even higher. Is there any point to these headphones? All other things being equal, audiophiles would say yes.

Bluetooth speakers will never be able to join in on the lossless audio party for the same reason as Bluetooth headphones and earbuds. But Wi-Fi speakers are a different story thanks to their higher-bandwidth wireless connections. Other Wi-Fi speakers will likely support some tiers of lossless audio from Apple Music but not necessarily all three tiers.

It would make sense if these speakers could support the same tier from Apple Music. Other Wi-Fi speakers from companies like Denon and Bluesound are considered hi-res devices.

However not all hi-res capable Wi-Fi speakers can claim this. Both Denon and Bluesound lack native Apple Music support. Dolby Atmos Music offers a more immersive, 3D way to listen to music. Atmos will also work automatically on the built-in speakers for select iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers.

And so, in the course of a single morning, affordable, no-compromise music streaming had become widely available. However, the data these technologies discard consists of sounds that humans rarely, if ever, notice—such as an acoustic guitar string being lightly plucked at the same instant as a loud cymbal crash. Apple Music now offers lossless streaming at no additional charge to its subscribers. The lossless streams will offer quality at least as good as you hear from CDs, and they can do even better.

It beat Spotify to the lossless punch, and may have pushed the competitor's decision when it comes to pricing. Last March I had predicted Spotify would offer lossless at no additional charge, now I'm certain of it! That clicking sound you keep hearing—it might just be Tidal Hi-Fi and Qobuz subscribers calculating the viability of jumping ship! Apple Music providing its lossless and Spatial Audio upgrade at no extra charge would normally put the ranks of competing lossless music streamers at a serious competitive disadvantage. So we know to expect hurdles to enjoying lossless and hi-res streaming from a company that has done little throughout its history to support these formats.
