'Silence is violence:' Why speaking up against racism speaks volumes
Knows the power of stories. Loves the colour yellow. Is prepared to tackle tough issues. Speaks out against racism. Yellow looks like sunshine. It tastes of freedom, feels warm, sounds friendly and speaks of fun. Comedian, actor and community worker Diana Nguyen radiates yellow.
A golden glow follows wherever she goes. Half her wardrobe is yellow and she even drives a yellow VW Beetle. However, the Vietnamese-Australian vividly recalls the moment she felt too yellow - her childhood innocence shattered by ignorance and racism. I remember being so scared that my mum would be sent back to Vietnam.
She adopted Hawthorn as her footy team and followed cricket with a passion. I realised the sacrifices she made for me and my sisters. She shares the view of fellow comedian Matt Okine. I thought that was beautiful. Diana uses comedy and her professional acting skills to encourage discussion about controversial and sometimes difficult issues such as racial stereotyping and the adversities refugees face. Spin-offs of the successful show have been a part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for the past three years.
If we sit silently, or are quietly being discriminate, then I think that is worse. Through storytelling we become more human, instead of being labelled. A conversation between two customers in line at a New Jersey supermarket turned ugly when one man denigrated the other with a racial slur and blamed the fellow shopper for the coronavirus pandemic. With so much else going on these days, it would be so easy to react to such a seemingly minor incident by saying, oh well, these things happen. Times are tough; tempers are short. But shrugging our shoulders is not an option. Doing so is complicity in a wrongful acts that too often are repeated, over and over. Our silence merely emboldens those who would tear apart the fabric of our society, whether through hate or ignorance — or the extremely volatile mix of the two.
Stand Against Racism
Stand Against Racism provides the opportunity for our community to take a StandAgainstRacim and unite our voices to educate, advocate, and promote racial justice. This campaign focused on the myriad of racial justice issues that impact the health and safety of communities of color. Most importantly, we invited our community to explore how From Declarations to Change: Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis can advance the work of justice in our community and empower people of color. Structural racism plays a large role in determining the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age.

Being anti-racist means more than ridding yourself of racist attitudes, beliefs and behaviors. It means you're also actively fighting that reprehensible trinity as it manifests in your life on a daily basis. Donating to activist organizations and protesting injustices are definitely good starts to becoming an ally. But that's not enough.

Metrics details. Racism and racial discrimination are fundamental causes and determinants of health and health inequalities globally, with children and adolescents particularly vulnerable. Racial discrimination is a common stressor in the lives of many children and adolescents, with growing evidence of negative associations between racial discrimination and multiple domains of child and adolescent health. Addressing racism and racial discrimination must be core public health priorities, even more so among children and young people. Schools are key settings in the lives of children and adolescents and become increasingly more important to identity formation. Schools are therefore key sites for the delivery of population-based programs to reduce racism and promote proactive bystander behaviour and healthy resistance to racism among all children and adolescents as well as among the adults. A mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design was used. Quantitative data showed student prosocial skills and teacher inter-racial climate improved in intervention schools compared to comparison schools.

Right now, there is a pain deeply etched in the soul of our nation and in the hearts of millions. To stand together, we must stand up for one another, and recognize the fear, hurt, and outrage rightly provoked by the senseless killing of George Floyd and a much longer history of racism. That painful past is still present today — not only in the form of violence, but in the everyday experience of deeply rooted discrimination.

A teenager has called for victims of racist abuse to speak out more after being targeted last month. Yasmin, 17, was racially abused as she walked home with a friend in Oswestry. She said her mother, who wears a hijab and has also been racially abused, would have preferred her not to have gone to the police, due to a lack of trust in authorities. However, Yasmin said this attitude meant incidents going underreported, particularly in rural areas. She said a young boy, whom she believed to be in primary school, shouted a highly offensive term. It led to her recalling other incidents in the past which she did not report. Yasmin said if her friend had not been with her last month, she probably "wouldn't have told anyone".

The murders that took place on March 16th in Atlanta are a sad addition to the growing list of racist and xenophobic incidents that members of the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities have experienced in Seattle and the rest of the country. Our thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones and with the individuals who have been targets of these insidious events. As a University, we must continue to speak out against hate, racism, and xenophobia to show that they have no place in our community. Sadly, if these incidents occur and are not reported, it makes it difficult for the UW to take action.
