David, aka Grumpy, needs our help. Great news. David is home! It was quite the ordeal to get him home and into the house, but it is done. Thank you to everyone for their support. Now a long road ahead to get him back on his feet and functioning normally. I have started a GoFundMe to help with the medical bills. Please help, if you can. Not a bad price, but what would one of these be worth today? Lots of guts for powerful music, but maybe not as refined. I have been looking out for a Luxman M Class A amp, but they don't come by very often these days. How would this Sumo compare to my Rotel gear? Would the Luxman squash the Sumo? Just wondering if its worth bothering with the Sumo with what I already have, and should I just wait for the Luxman to come around? Anyone have any exposure to this Sumo amp?

I put mine on layaway, so I will hear it then on my system. Also someone mentioned with the 9, these comments: "The stock fan is pretty quiet, but may be worth while to replace it's old. It's a VAC type with a R series resistor. Noise is subjective, what may be objectionable to the other fellow may be acceptable to you or me. The Sumo is a push-pull class A amplifier with sliding bias, it increases its bias as the output increases.

James Bongiorno received a patent for this circuit, and of course others have now built similar sliding bias circuits. The opamp is an LM selected , and pretty long-in-the-tooth by todays standards. An OPA is a drop-in replacement, and much better sounding. Others could be used, but they would have to be selected for high-voltage operation. There are a pair of low quality 0. I may consider this for my Sumo amp.

One question I haven't found out- are these quick amps? Meaning do they give a lot of current for dynamic peaks to really kick the speakers at moments of high impact music? This is where my Rotel excells, but wondering how the Sumo would compare- especially being a mid 80s amp when high current wasn't designed in yet. Messages: 10, Location: Shorewood MN. The mods all seem practical, easy, and inexpensive. The only tricky one may be the fan, sometimes it's difficult to improve db level while maintaining airflow.

Speed of the amp may have nothing to do with the amount of current produced. What you may be interested in is the slew rate which is an indicator in the time domain that is measurable and has effect on transients. I've found that it is not the "be all, end all" measuring stick of a good sounding amp. I have some amps with high slew rate that sound sluggish, to me.

If you haven't had a Class A amp of quality and the Sumo fits here you're in for a listening surprise, methinks. There is something about the way the signal is delivered with Class A that presents a fuller or clearer sound. The first time I listened to my new Pass F5 there were a lot of things that came out that were previously missing.

Transients in the recordings were still there, of course, the amp just handled them so effortlessly, they seemed to be of secondary importance.

Moving from the Rotel to the Sumo will be like enjoying a rose or enjoying an orchid, both can be good, but one may be more sublime. Good luck with your Sumo and the mods. Messages: You want an interesting experience? Call James and tell him what you plan to do to his amplifier.

See what he says. James Bongiorno. He designed that power amp. He would probably suggest you have it rebuilt. That was a great power amp and I am fairly sure your modifications would not sit well with him.

He designs for very specific results and he is regarded pretty highly in this industry. He will talk to you He is what you might call eccentric. I have talked to him a few times about some SAE stuff he designed. He is extremely intelligent but not the easiest person to talk to. Sort of like trying to communicate with a pit bull that hasn't decided to lick you or tear your leg off. If you do have specific questions about it you might try to contact him. Otherwise I think Absolute Sound can help you with anything you might need.

I've had multiple pieces rebuilt by both Mike Bettinger and Mark Wilson, and Mike would unreservedly be my first choice. Some else suggested this even: "What I would do is contact the designer directly and see what he thinks. SUMO's work in the realm of pure Class A amplification began with the company's inception in the 's. As a result of this work SUMO quickly became identified with Class A amplifier design; and our first product utilizing Class A circuitry earned worldwide recognition.

And perhaps most importantly, the Gold's unique circuitry received a US patent. Class A amplification has long been recognized as an ideal design approach.

It lends an unstrained quality to music and yields a sense of uncompromised sonic purity It results in the virtual elimination of crossover notch distortion, It also brings about improvements in both bandwidth and phase integrity - all as a consequence of operating the amplifier exclusively within its linear transfer region.

Class A operation, however, is typically achieved at considerable cost. Substantial heatsinking and a massive amplifier chassis are required.

Good ventilation and dedicated convection fans are equally necessary. Serious listeners have had to weigh the high cost and unwieldy inconvenience of Class A amplifier design against its sonic purity and tubelike sweetness. Amplifier manufacturers have responded with quasi Class A dynamic bias circuits. Eliminated totally in our design are both bias instability and thermal runaway With passive circuitry setting and maintaining bias levels, our design is inherently stable and linear.

SUMO's Class A output stage, for example, has negligible distortion at any frequency, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, at any power level up to clipping with absolutely No feedback applied. We use only enough feedback in the final analysis to balance such parameters, as gain, noise, and damping. The result is pure Class A operation without thermal tracking problems. Heatsinking requirements, chassis bulk, and cost are reduced.

Pure Class A operation is, therefore, realized in a less costly, more manageable package. Rated at 65 Watts per channel into B Ohms, into 4 Ohms, the Nine Plus utilizes a complement of twenty extremely fast super Beta output transistors 97 devices noted for high switching speed.

In total they provide the Nine Plus with power dissipation of an incredible Watts per channel, and are exemplary in terms of high frequency resolution, safe operating area, and low distortion.

While a derivative of the original SUMO Gold, the Nine Plus is both a product extension and a design refinement reflecting a clear understanding of Class A amplification. The Nine Plus is a balanced differential amplifier. Each side of the amplifier is active as opposed to normal practice, in which one half is referenced to ground. The positive and negative amplifiers are painstakingly matched to eliminate asymmetrical distortion; then only enough feedback is applied to ensure perfect balance from input to output.

The total linearity and stability thus achieved prevents the occurrence of frequency overload and slewing, and virtually eliminates TIM.

The Nine Plus rolls off at a perfectly controlled rate of 6 dB per octave exactly like a simple R-C network and cannot be overloaded in the frequency domain. Direct coupled circuitry is used throughout.

Phase shift is, as a result, virtually nonexistent. A complement of twenty output transistors and a power supply anchored by a massive 1. There are no invasive protection circuits.

There is no current limiting. All told, the Nine Plus is a compellingly musical, very transparent amplifier. When stressed it clips softly, yet recovers instantly It is an amplifier whose sound genuinely belies its rated power..

Anyone have any opinions on Sumo amplifiers? Im looking at getting a Sumo Nine Plus pure class A amp down the road, and wonder if anyone has any thoughts on them. I ended up using it to drive my subs for a while and then sold it. It wasn't nasty harsh but enough so that I using a Dynaco for a while instead. It may also be that it just didn't like the load the ESL's presented and may sound perfectly fine with other types of speakers. Find all posts by DaveInVA.

John Atkinson wrote in Way back in the mists of time, around to be exact, the Marantz company in Europe introduces a range of ostensibly cost-no-object solid-state electronics under the "Esotec" banner. Manufactured in Japan, but apparently designed in the USA, these ruggedly constructed components are noteworthy in that the power amplifiers are capable of being operated with the output stages running under class-A bias as well as class-B. The relatively expensive Esotec amplifiers sell in small numbers in the UK—remember that this is before the rebirth of the British high end—and pass into the history books. I am reminded of them, however, when I visit my friend Ivor Humphreys of Gramophone magazine at Christmas ; he is using a pair of the 30W mono class-A Marantz amplifiers to drive KEF R s—and making very nice sounds.

Pictures don't do them justice, for the simple fact I am not a photographer, and they are meant to be heard, not seen. The designer, who was well respected for his audio design work, has passed away, making these pieces even more collectable for audiophiles. I am the original owner. I used these 2 amps in a 5.

Sumo nine plus. So, my question is if it is possibel to modify the unbalanced input from the amp in a balanced one. Can someone here give me an idea how i can made this? It would be very easy to do if this was a diy project. The lower opamp stage needs to get converted to non inverting and the gain equalised. Essentially exactly the same as the upper opamp in the circuit.
