By TheFlash , December 19, in 2 Channel. The late Peter Dunlop created the very first Systemdek Turntable over 30 years ago. From the first day of launch, it caused quite a stir among the press with it's numerous innovations. Not surprisingly, it took very little time before people realized just how comfortably it outperformed the competition.

Posts: Location: Maryland Joined: April 6, Posts: Location: Copenhagen Joined: December 29, I currently have the stock profile arm but was thinking of upgrading to a Graham 2.

I realize this is subjective but I still want to hear your opinion. Basically, what I want to know is the next step up the ladder regarding TT choice for me to hear a clear improvement? Thank you for any and all opinions you can provide. Hide full thread outline! Set-up and manual? Show full thread outline!

The Systemdeks were designed to be an affordable TT, similar to the original Rega models. As far as recommendations, it all depends on what the rest of your system is composed of.

If you're aiming for a Graham, which would rank as a superarm, that's one hell of a system you are working towards! Thanks for the reply. Very satisfied with the sound and a keeper for probably many many years to come. So this is it. At the very least the arm. Fro a cart I have several but th one on the arm now is an Ortofon X3 also looking to upgrade. Of course, the condition of the deck needs to be taken into account; the image makes it look as though it has an acrylic platter, whereas the IV as released was fitted with a sandwich-construction platter of heavy zinc alloy and a top surface of acrylic or a similar plastic.

The deck was produced in fairly small numbers, I believe, and there may have been variations between samples. It sounds as though it's working well, all the same, but maybe the Graham is a little ambitious for this deck! I would look at upgrading the arm and cartridge. I think you have a really good deck. My choice would be the Audiomods arm. I am a little bias in my opinion. I love mine. This is a hard arm to beat at it's price point. It punches way above it's weight.

You may also want to play around with platter mats. Sturgus Audiomods. Do you have an owner's manual and how old is the belt? When was the last time it was set-up suspension-wise and who by? If it has been a while, have a read of the set-up process below my signature block, and have a go yourself.

Only then will you know whether it's still up to an upgrade or two, or if it's a keeper. I'd consider upgrading the arm to the second or third rank of arms, but I'd also consider upgrading the cartridge, even with that arm.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I still have some confusion as to which way to go given all the nuances behind turntable performance and selection so I want to simplify the question and greatly appreciate your opinion. If I did install a Graham 2. I am very fond of VPI for several reasons built quality, service, performance, etc. Please be as specific as you can with the reply.

Thank you very much. I doubt anyone has actually listened to all the table choices you are considering.

Whether the IVe is better, worse or the same is an open question. Also, the VPIs you mentioned are non-suspended and the Systemdek is. Usually, people have a strong preference for one or the other. Why don't you try upgrading the cartridge first. If you like the change, upgrade the arm, if not, upgrade the turntable. I wouldn't go too crazy though, a good mid-level turntable would be a good match for your current very nice gear.

Also, I would NOT put a unipivot arm on a suspended table, you are asking for trouble! My guess is that something as relatively modest as an Rega RB would yield a significant improvement over the profile arm that is holding back your Systemdek. I would try something like that before considering anything else. The Systemdek IV was the most advanced Systemdek until the resurgence of the company under art loudspeakers.

It has a solid wood plinth and the aluminium subchassis is suspended the springs stretch rather than compress. This gave it mass bass and the see through mid and tops given by acrylic turntables. This one has been fitted with a solid acrylic turntable so will be a little bass shy compared to the original.

To better this turntable today personal view is you would need to move to the new Systemdek turntables..

Who's the biggest Audiophile on ILX?

Dear All Thank you so much for a wonderful project. I have just finished my CNO 2. Having built some HI Fi furniture recently I was drawn to your designs by the use of birch plywood as that is something I use a fair bit After deciding that I could not get a 3 way design under our shutters I settled on the 2. I wanted to get the feeling that the cabinets were carved from a solid block of birch ply so laminated up some boards and decided to go for a 45 degree mitre on the top. That gave some issues as, with the tweeter so close to the joint, I decided to cut the rebate for the tweeter after glueing up the cabinets.

Grado cartridge? Is that the standard of the rest of your set-up. Some loudspeakers found in a recycle bin? An amp that you enherritated from.

To the younger hi-fi enthusiast, of whom there are undoubtedly some among our ranks, it might come as a surprise to learn the BBC once designed its own speakers. The same licence fee that's now used to fund new series of Mrs Brown's Boys was once invested in what Rogers Hi-Fi's Andy Whittle calls Britain's "world-breaking commitment to audio".

Where is good for Cambridge repairs? Mine needs a good clean and some tightening up. Speakers are good old Sonys that sound so rich, deep and fat. I love them so I have that Cambridge Audio amp.

Systemdek IIX tweaks. I've bought a Rega arm to replace the AT fitted on my Systemdek and I'm wondering if there are any other tweaks I can perform while I'm machining up a new armboard and VTA adjuster.
