I have been reading up on this discussion board and notice a lot of terminology, and I guess music theory that I am clueless about! Does anyone know of a good book, or series of books, or videos, that I could use to gain some knowledge applicable to playing the violin?
I don't know what I don't know, but know I don't know a lot! But if you've had no theory at all, you might want to look through the kids section at the music store and find a series that appeals to you and work through them If you can find someone to 'teach' you the very basics, and maybe help when you get stuck, you can work through quite a lot on your own too.
I'd also suggest using piano theory. If you can get your hands on a mandolin fretted , that also helps a great deal with seeing what's what on a neck.
Ricci Adams' musictheory. UDayton music handouts -these sheets summarize entire chapters of heavy theory textbooks in a concise and pleasant manner. Dolmetsch - a very in depth, extensive and really quite dry resource of pretty much everything.
The guy does, however, have almost no charisma, and makes me feel awkward. If you're serious, try and pick up a textbook used, new, it doesn't particularly matter, most of theory is rooted in the Common Practice period, which is to say that it hasn't changed in centuries.

It's been great - they enjoy learning and meeting other inspired adult music students, and we are able to spend more lesson time on playing beautifully rather than theory basics. If this is an option for you it could be fun. I could really use such a tool. Beyond that anything that would help to internalize the idea of chord changes and how to properly comp.. Ask in your local music shop which they would recommend.
That's fine if you live in Boston but many of us don't have access to such places with trained staff. That is why I now reiterate the request for YOUR recommendations for specific theory books, for ear-training materials, and such. These might be printed or traditionally published items or publicly accessible web content. When I looked at it, I found that my teacher had just gone through the chapters in his lectures and left out 'the piano stuff'. I have since learned that musicians on many instruments use the book to learn music theory.
Yes, there are CDs about ear training, but it boils down to practice. Play a note, then pick an interval and play it. Now play the note and sing the interval. Start on different notes. Over time, work your way through singing minor seconds up in chromatic steps to tenths. After you are OK going up, do the same going down. Then mix ups and downs. Do this for 10 minutes every day and in 6 months, you will have much improved ears.
You will notice the difference in improved intonation because you can then hear finer gradations of "being in tune". When I was looking around for a free course this was the best one I found by quite a long margin. The Open University do some excellent courses. There is an iPhone app. There is a free limited function version and a full paid for one. It is easy and fun, it has certainly got me thinking more about actually listening to notes.
