Both of these are pretty much identical in function. You use a USB cable connected to a laptop where you run the Audio Control software to configure the unit. There is a new bluetooth module that gives you the ability to connect and configure these with a tablet or phone.
The only thing automatic about the setup is that the unit can auto equalize the input signal to flatten out the frequency response. You do this by playing pink noise and then just hitting the auto button on the output page. This will perform minor tweaks which you can do over and over to flatten out the freq response.
You would need a RTA and a mic to check the actual frequency response from the speakers inside the car. That part isn't automatic like most home theater receivers.
The integration was pretty easy to get setup. I now have the D It is a super small package that has 4 amplified channels and has a set of line outs. You can use all of the DSP features to set a crossover and eq curve for the line outs into another amplifier. I went this route in the Miata because there is such limited space and you basically get the DSP for free. I've used a wide variety of amps going back to the '80s all the way up to the present, Precision Power, JL Slash series, Rockford Fosgate.
The Audio Control amps are high quality amps. You can certainly get better amps if you want to spend more, but it is astonishing what you get for the money you spend with Audio Control.
It was the same for most of the other options available from Crutchfield. You can bridge each pair of channels to w 4ohms. The optional AC-3 remote knob you lets you change memory presets. The bluetooth module might solve that, but I haven't gotten that yet. I've only used the USB cable with a laptop. Back in I had an Alpine system with the remote processor.
I really liked being able to access everything via the head unit. This was a double din unit with a full screen so you could adjust eq, crossover, etc directly from the head unit. I miss having that much control. I'm sure there's something out there that I'm not ware of. I know there are a lot of headunits out there that provide eq, xover, and time alignment, but it's almost impossible to replace a modern factory headunit now that many of the other controls have been integrated into the infotainment systems.

Right now it sits in behind the passenger seat and it does wonders for the imaging due to timing adjustments, and the 30 band EQ is a blessing. You can tailor your sound exactly the way you want.
