Thread starter brianoc Start date May 19, Does anyone use a unity buffer or on-board effects loop with the Axe-fx? I know that some guitarists use them to send full volume to effects pedals allowing them to adjust volume post effects. Is this possible with the axe-fx?
How would one do this? This is an example of the typical wiring in a regular rig. I have been doing this since using the Ultra with my Grateful Dead cover band just switched over to the 2. The chief advantage is being able to set certain effects to their sweet spots -- like the envelope filter -- so they react and sound the same regardless of where the guitar's volume pot is.
Anyone who's used an envelope filter knows it can be a headache to get it to open and close properly and still be able to turn your volume up or down. This solves that issue. I'm not sure that a unity gain buffer is truly needed with the AxeFX because it was designed to cope with long cable runs and signal loss.
But if you have the usual Jerry Garcia style two-cable effects loop built into your guitar -- i. Then comes your amp, cabinet, reverb and that goes out of the AxeFX. Plug the send of the TRS cable into Input 1. The return of the TRS cable goes into Output 2. The main guitar cable goes into Input 2.
Turn the input 1 and 2 level controls to equal levels i. Now when you throw the effects loop switch on the guitar, you will go through the entire chain. Defeat the effects loop and you are going only into the amp, speaker and reverb blocks. Works like a charm. Output 1 remains going to your monitors or whatever you're doing after the AxeFX. You may have to balance the levels within the FX Loop block to get them to be the same with all the effects blocks bypassed.
The only downside to this scenario is you cannot use the front panel input for the guitar, thus you lose the advantages of that and I wish Cliff could make that jack switchable somehow from being input 1 to input 2. But it will still sound good. To plug a regular guitar into a preset like this that does not have a built in effects loop, simply bypass the FX Loop block and you will run from input 1 straight out of the AxeFX but all the effects blocks will be active.
Attached is a diagram that shows how I have everything wired. I'm not sure if I wired something wrong or the patch I made is designed wrong.

You need to connect the shunt in column 3 of that routing to the FX Loop block only, not create a path around FXL to amp block. IOW you can just use a single row for that preset. Make sure the front panel output 2 knob is turned up.
That's one possible cause of not having sound while FXL is engaged. You have fixed my problems kind sir! My knowledge only goes so far and then I simply confuse myself on a regular basis too much fun in my younger years I guess. Thanks again, I'm all set and back on the road! You can use the front input for the guitar's output if you use the feedback send and return blocks to route the desired effects to and from the loops inputs and outputs.
This loop is independent of the rest of the grid and can by bypassed at the guitar. If OBEL is on, this loops output gets sent out via the guitars volume knob and output jack into the Axe front input jack and on to the wah and amp etc.
Bumping this.. Can someone post screen shots of there patch.. So i need a TRS coming out of the obel and then a regular guitar cable to go into input 1 correct.. Sorry jazzgtrl4 said:. What Is An Effects Loop: How to connect pedals to an effects loop
In this article, we will explain how to optimally chain your pedalboard! To know the order you need to place your effects pedals, and above all why, depending on the sound you want to achieve. That way we can understand the purpose of the effects loop, and which pedals should be placed inside it. The first stage of an amplifier, when plugged your cable into its input, is the preamplifier. This stage will be mainly responsible of the sound of the amp. It is the tubes of this stage that are generally saturated by changing the gain, making the amp more or less crunchy. After the preamp is the power amp. This stage will simply amplify the signal, going from a few volts to several hundred volts! The tubes can also have an influence on the sound, even if the goal is not to make them saturate like the preamp. After the power stage, there is a transformer.

An effects loop is a pair of connections allowing a musician typically a guitarist to place effects pedals or signal processors in more than one place in their signal chain. You may wish to put distortion and compression effects between your guitar and your amplifier's main input, and time-based effects like delay and reverb in your amplifier's effects loop, which is inserted between the preamp and power amp, giving it a distinct tone. The patch bay at the top of the board contains two sets of inputs and outputs, and corresponding connections on the top outside edge for connection to your amplifier.
