Faculty Program Statement. Spanish for Heritage Speakers. F Deals with orthography, lexicon development, morphology, syntax, and other linguistic topics as applied to the development of all language skills listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Emphasizes reading and writing about well-known and pivotal authentic texts of varying genres and formats from the Spanish-speaking world. Emphasis is on the United States, Mexico, and Spain. Students need to use the self-placement questionnaire posted on the Language Program web page.

Spanish for Heritage Speakers: course description


Courses and can be taken out of sequence. Synopsis Culture and Composition in conjunction with Spanish , which begins the advanced intermediate learning sequence of the Spanish language , continues to develop proficiency in communication which was aquired in course Spanish for Native Speakers I.

In this course, students are able to develop their linguistic ability in association with their written and comprehensive skills. Furthermore, emphasis is also placed on the subjects of Spanish culture, technology and communication. Class discussions, workshops and activities will revolve around class lectures, movies and other materials that are used to demonstrate various aspects of interdisciplinary Hispanic cultures from past through present.

Heritage Language Courses

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers a Spanish Heritage Language Program with specially-designed courses for students who have learned Spanish at home or in a Spanish-speaking community. Whether you are a heritage student seeking to declare a minor or major in Spanish, expand your knowledge of the Spanish-speaking linguistic and cultural heritages across the globe, increase your confidence in your Spanish skills, or build linguistic and cultural connections with the Latino community of UNCG or greater Greensboro, our Spanish heritage language courses offer multiple ways to engage with Spanish. Service-learning provides students opportunities to practice their bilingual skills and cultural knowledge in contexts beyond the classroom and build ties with communities to maintain their heritage language and culture. Each of these courses counts toward the minor or major in Spanish. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a track designed for Spanish heritage speakers who communicate effectively in their home, community language.

Not all Heritage Language courses are taught every year. See the published course schedule for a listing of courses and sections available in any given term. These are the classes for you. Enrich your language skills with an instructor who targets key areas of development specifically for heritage speakers of Spanish. Study among others developing their voice on the same borderlands between English and Spanish. Heritage Spanish courses are designed for students who grew up in an environment where the language was spoken frequently who have had contact with it at home , and who want to improve their reading, writing, and conversation skills. The Heritage Language Initiative HLI seeks to address the needs of speakers of languages other than English in our communities and to build on the strengths that come from bilingualism.

Heritage Speakers Class Curriculum: Year One


The Spanish Heritage Language SHL Program offers courses for individuals who grew up in Spanish-speaking environments and are able to communicate, to some extent, in more than one language. Some students are immigrants who have recently arrived in the US and have had extensive schooling in their native countries. Others are first, second, or third generation bilinguals whose abilities in the heritage language vary widely. While some are highly proficient in Spanish, others only possess basic speaking and listening skills, or merely understand the language. To serve these different individuals' needs, the Spanish Heritage Language Program was developed as an independent track at the University of Houston. SHL courses are specifically designed to use the student's preexisting contact with Spanish.

Heritage Speakers Programs

Heritage Language Learners are students who grew up surrounded by the Spanish language and culture, even if as adults they feel more comfortable speaking English. Exposure to the heritage language typically takes place in the home environment, but can also take place through the community or time spent in a Spanish-speaking country. Because of these varied experiences, heritage speakers make up a very heterogeneous group; some feel comfortable using the heritage language in different contexts, while others may experience some insecurities, particularly using the language in formal contexts. It is our main goal to help students develop an appreciation of their cultural and linguistic heritage while working to improve their language skills. Our definition is therefore not that of a dormant aspect that needs be brought back, but one that is dynamic, it is present, and it is future. If the answer to these questions is positive, then you may very well be a heritage speaker. We encourage you to consider taking classes with us.

SPAN 121 - Spanish for Heritage Speakers

The Heritage Speakers class at my school is offered in two sections every day. Our class length is just shy of the hour mark, at around 57 minutes. As it is such a selective elective, we only offer one level per year and it is available for th graders to take. That being said, many students will repeat the same course year after year.

Students learn about different Spanish-speaking communities across the U. The courses aim to foster a sense of belonging through engagement and open dialogue about different racial and ethnic identities, justice and equity, and diverse historical backgrounds. We incorporate the experiences of growing up in bilingual and bicultural communities into our curriculum to teach critical thinking and self-expression. In these courses, we offer students opportunities for civic engagement, leadership development and community outreach. If you successfully complete SPAN , you meet all the foreign language requirements.

The courses in this track are designed to meet the particular needs of heritage learners. We validate the linguistic and trans-cultural experiences and knowledge they bring.

CMS World Language Programs employ a curriculum that is based on the ACTFL and NCDPI standards and thematic units, with clearly defined proficiency targets, which provides scaffolded language learning experiences and opportunities for students to interact with authentic sources in the target language. Courses Offered in grades In most programs, students have an opportunity to take a 9 or 18 week Exploratory or Middle Middle School non-credit World Language course in the 6th grade. The language s offered will depend on the staffing at each middle school. Level I of a world language in middle school consists of a two-year sequence of study for high school credit that begins with Level I part A in the 7th grade, and is completed with Level I part B in the 8th grade. Students who intend to participate in the IB program in high school, or continue into AP for their World Language, should begin their world language studies in the 7th grade.
