Often people are wanting to add speakers to their amplifier to increase power. However, in most cases, adding speakers will reduce the power in any one speaker. This article looks at how multiple speakers share power from the amplifier, whether they are wired in series, parallel or series and parallel. As in most articles, we are going to talk about speakers connected to one amplifier. That is, either the left or right channel amplifier of your hifi. So if you want to connect 4 speakers in total, you are only going to connect 2 speakers to each amplifier.

The rated power of speakers is a concept often misunderstood. Many people think that if they have a speaker rated at 50 watts, then adding another 50 watt speaker will give them watts of power.

It is true that 2 speakers rated at 50 watts gives you a speaker system with the capacity to handle watts of amplifier power. It gives you the capacity, that is all. It does not produce watts. If the amplifier can only deliver a maximum of 50 watts of power, then the amplifier can still only deliver a maximum of 50 watts of power irrespective of the power rating capacity of the speakers. The power rating of a speaker is normally indicating the maximum power you can safely drive the speaker with.

The speaker will also work when driven at lower power. The maximum power output of an amplifier is dependent on the amplifier design and total load impedance of the speakers connected to it.

A more detailed discussion on speaker impedance and power output can be read in the article Speaker Impedance Changes Amplifier Power. In summary, halving the total impedance by doubling the number of speakers in parallel can increase the power output of an amplifier. In theory halving the load impedance will double the power output of an amplifier.

In practice this is rarely achievable, but a considerable increase in power is normally achievable. For an understanding of how amplifier power is calculated and what terms like continuous power and peak power mean, see the article on Understanding Amplifier Power. For a given power output from an amplifier, that power will be shared between the speakers connected to it. Logically, the power connected to two speakers will be shared by those two speakers.

If there are four speakers, then the power will be shared by the four speakers. I suggest the main reason to add speakers to an amp is to spread the speaker coverage. In a house, you might do this to have sound in another room, or outside. In a church or hall, you would use multiple speakers to spread the sound across a wide area. How the speakers share power from the amplifier is dependent on whether the impedance of each speaker is the same or not, and if the speakers are wired in series, parallel or a combination of series and parallel.

For further understanding of speaker impedance, see the article Understanding Speaker Impedance. If all the speakers connected to the amplifier are of the same impedance, then the power is shared equally. If the speakers wired in parallel each have a different impedance, the lower impedance speakers will draw more than the higher impedance speakers.

If the speakers wired in series each have a different impedance, the higher impedance speakers will draw more than the lower impedance speakers. Below are a couple of examples. If your speaker configuration is similar to any of the above diagrams you can work out how your speakers share power for your amplifier. Speakers share power from an amplifier. How they share power is dependent on how the speakers are wired, and the impedance of each speaker.

Keep in mind, that as the total load impedance falls, the amplifier will output more power, up to its limits see this article. Also consider the sensitivity of each speaker, as this will contribute to the loudness of each speaker.

See the article on Understanding Speaker Sensitivity for more details. To see how power is shared when using speaker selector switches, see my Speaker Selector Switch Simulators.

Yet, it is often the first and possibly only parameter Understanding Audio Understanding Speaker Sensitivity.

Speaker sensitivity is a measurement of how well a speaker converts the amplifier power to to acoustic energy. In others words, how loud the However, in most cases, adding speakers will reduce the power in Speaker impedance changes amplifier power output. In fact, your amplifier power could be nearly half or double its capacity - depending on the impedance Home Speakers Understanding Speaker Impedance.

Speaker impedance is often presented as a complex subject and therefore is either ignored or misunderstood. A basic understanding of speaker impedance is not Distributed speaker systems are also known as " volt line" or "70 volt line" speaker systems. They are used extensively where multiple speakers are Understanding Audio Double amplifier power does not double the volume.

This article logically shows the relationship between amplifier power, SPL and loudness. It includes a level difference exercise and a gain calculator. Understanding Audio Understanding Acoustic Feedback. Acoustic feedback it that annoying loud continuous tone you get when the sound system is not set up or operated properly.

Acoustic feedback can Understanding Audio Understanding Audio Frequency. Every sound we hear is at a certain frequency. Subwoofer Wiring Diagrams – How to Wire Subs

This article will give you a better breakdown on how to convert 8-ohm speakers to 4 ohms than our initial thought. Choosing the right one has caused the debate of parallel vs. A series circuit is similar to a straight line. A series circuit has more than 1 resistor but only 1 path. An easy way to tell if you have a series circuit is by turning a resistor off. To find out the total impedance value of your circuit all you have to do is add up all the impedance values. A parallel circuit has many paths for electrons to get from one end to the other. This is the main difference between a parallel and resistor circuit which only has 1 pathway. This formula helps you determine how much impedance for a parallel circuit has.

wiring dual 4 ohm to 8 ohm speakers

The speaker ohm rating is an indication of the speaker's AC impedance, which varies with the frequency of the input signal. This variation of the speaker's impedance can be seen on the speaker's spec sheet impedance curve. This is why the spec sheet indicates this speaker to have an 8 ohm "nominal impedance. Most of the speakers are available in alternative ohm ratings usually 4, 8 an 16 ohm versions. This variety allows for more flexibility in matching the overall equivalent impedance of your speaker s to the output impedance of the amplifier.

The ohm is a measurement of the electric resistance between two points. In a speaker, the ohm is a bad thing. The lower the ohms the less energy it takes to drive the speaker. The less energy, the more you get out of your amps. An 8 ohm speaker requires more amperage to run than a 4 ohm speaker. You need to know the ohms of all of your speakers if you want to calculate the load your amp is taking and to compensate for it. In a car audio you should always run your equipment at the lowest possible Ohm load that an amplifier, head unit or speaker can safely handle.
