Ar94s speakers not working

I have a pair of Revel M22 monitors that I suspect one has a blown tweeter no sound at all. Am planning to purchase a pair of new tweeters, but dawned on me that I should check "output" at the speaker wires where the tweeter is How can I check that? Can I clip leads onto those wires and hook into a small bookshelf speaker to check? Or is that a no-no?

I cannot find anything resembling them on the net. The label on the base has a serial number with an 'AU' prefix, presumably suggesting that they were a version intended for Australia which is where I bought them. It is not clear whether they were manufactured in the US or the UK, or in fact assembled in Australia. The plinths and the top are simply painted MDF and are of a pretty shoddy manufacture.

I intend to replace both with some decent local timber as the plinth is screwed on and the top is simply pushed onto 4 nylon pins. The wrap-around speaker cloth is a sewn tube with draw strings top and bottom. This feature explains why it was not until after purchase that I discovered all the woofers had rotten surrounds. The seller was most emphatic that "they were perfect and sounded wonderful Attached Thumbnails.

Thanks for that info Lance. I had to replace the surrounds on all 4 woofers, as I mentioned in post 1. The person who sold the speakers to me deceived me as to their condition, and because of the 'wrap-around' speaker cloth I was not able to check at the time. Lance, you are a star! I don't know why I failed to find the type number of these speakers before. I found pictures of what was said to be the whole range of AR over the years and none resembled the 'sock' covered type.

AR94s they are. The 'AU' in the type number sticker suggests that they were intended for Australia, which is where I found them. Thanks again, BC. The main thing to me is that you enjoy what you now have. They appear to be well regarded, also probably not too many of them left in Australia now. I still cannot believe just how good they are now sounding. The sound stage they are creating is incredibly wide, deep and detailed. When Total Recoil delivered them back to me they looked and sounded better than when they came out of the factory. I just love my Gales and could not be happier with the result. These old speakers, before your expert attention, were in a very poor state — so bad that had it not been for your advice I would have thrown them out. I am pleased to say that the results have been spectacular — the sound quality is so much better than that produced by my modern, expensive speakers that I have replaced them with the Wharfedales and they now form part of a very impressive high quality sound system.

I have wondered if the mediocre performance of the Sx mostly in the midrange, most noticeable with vocals is responsible for the relatively low regard and selling price the AR94 gets in the marketplace. At least there are a lot of them available, and the price is right. Whether or not you go with foam surrounds instead of rubber, and copper wire for the tweeters instead of silver, and inexpensive polypropylene capacitors instead of his choices is very much up to you. There is no real design change here, just replacing old parts. He certainly is enthusiastic about the sound he ends up with.
