Fender 5f4

This amp looks odd on the surface, but don't let the looks fool you. The chassis is a real Tweed Super 5F4, an amazing sounding circuit! The power transformer is original, the output transformer is a Mercury Magnetics Axiom - as good a replacement as you can buy. Over the years, some misplaced repairs to the chassis were performed. There are a couple new holes from a different output transformer.

This 5F4 circuit has a unique break up that has been featured in recordings by the likes of Joe Bonamassa and The Eagles. The amp utilizes two 6L6gc power tubes for to push 28 watts before clipping, all the while delivering fat luscious low tones with pristine highs.

We paired the Super circuit with two Jensen C10Q 35 Watt speakers that are lively with a fat, snappy response and offer a cool gritty overdriven sound that will not sacrifice articulation for distortion.

For those players seeking a responsive amp that is perfect for roots rock styles and is easy to haul around, the Mojotone Tweed Super Style kit is a no brainer.

Global controls include presence, bass, and treble for a multitude of sonic variations. There are two channels, bright and normal, and each has two inputs. The normal channel is more tame with a slightly warmer overall sound, while the bright channel has more aggressive highs and breaks up slightly faster.

The mod: Connect the red wire centertap of the output transformer to the load side of the standby switch. That is the way the blackface Fender amps are wired. This is the 3rd or 4th 5F4 I've put together. They all had Mojotone cabinets, but this is the first "kit" I've put together from Mojotone parts. All in all, a great kit, and a great amp. I added a few items such as star washers for the jacks, and a copper grounding plate Hobby Lobby!

I did have a few really small issues wrong tubes, damaged transformer which Mojotone handled super fast and effortlessly. The kit included adequate lengths of wire to get it all connected up.

The instructions are Not a beginners kit - unless - they're also studying some assembly tricks online or in a good "amp book". I did like the way Mojotone compartmentalized all the resistors and capacitors, instead of just putting it all in a bag. Just look at the label, check the code on the part, and install. No rummaging around like doin' a jigsaw puzzle!

I also added my own little secret circuit change, that does not change the great tones from the preamp, but does up the gain into the cathodyne phase inverter.

Result is higher output for stage use. Output measures Mojotone covered my cabinet in black tolex, at my request. I ditched their excellent hardware and substituted all stainless steel fasteners, and implemented T-nuts on the baffle.

Played last night: Fender Deluxe 5e3 tweed and a Super 5f4 clone amps

They say Leo Fender's all time favorite amp was the tweed Super and I can see why. This amp has some killer tone. It's all original including the filter caps and the trannies. That's pretty unusual. Maybe there's a changed resistor I didn't catch but it's as original as they come. I took out the original, very tired re-coned P10Rs and put in a set of P10Qs which sound way better.

It's not this actual amp, but it's another 5F4 clone by Mojotone. Some of the components have been upgraded from the standard Weber stuff, including switches Carling , jacks Switchcraft , and tubes EH preamps, Sovtek power tubes.
