The S-phone is a versatile single rack space four channel headphone amplifier, loaded with advanced features that provide tremendous flexibility for monitor and cue mixing. The Master Input features an input level and LED meter to control and display the overall stereo input.

A convenient Stereo Auxiliary input is available on each channel so that individual line signals from direct or buss outputs can be mixed with the main stereo input. For greater sonic control, S-phone also features a 2-band equalizer on each of the four channels. In more complex setups, you might want to send each headphone a separate mix fed from a dedicated aux send, but in many home recording situations feeding each headphone from the same monitor mix is often enough. Designed for desktop use, the Samson QH4 has a glossy plastic top panel and aluminium-clad sides. All the connections, other than the four headphone outputs, are on the rear panel. The headphone outs are on the front edge of the box where they are easy to access and power comes from the included power adaptor. My tests using a variety of headphones confirmed that; the available clean volume was always far in excess of what was comfortable or healthy, come to that!

I bought this because I wanted to be able to compare my headphones, and doing so efficiently requires a quick switch from one headphone to another. There's nothing better for doing this than having an amp with multiple ports and independent volume controls for each port technically, independent amps in one box -- and that's exactly what this is. This way, I can have my HiFiMAN HE planar magnetic headphones in one port, and my Fidelio X2 in another, and being able to match volume to my ears by adjusting the independent volume controls at vastly different positions on the dial, which is necessary because the HE require a lot more power than the Fidelio X2. The Samson QH4 does exactly what I expect an amp to do and nothing more -- powerfully and cleanly amplify the signal from m y input source, and do it without adding any significant color to the sound. I couldn't detect an coloration with my ears, and it definitely has enough power.
