Location: Littleton, Colorado. I actually tested a pair out before I laid out any cash. About a block from my house a guy in a van pulled up beside me at the stoplight and motioned me to roll down the window.
He gave me a pitch and I agreed to pull over and look at them. I was well aware of this scam. He claimed he was doing a high-end home theater installation and was shipped an extra pair of speakers that his boss told him to sell.
For the hell of it I told him I live around the corner and if he would let me test them I'd consider it. Not the best demo, I know, but I wasn't serious about it anyway. Sounded way worse than the old MCS speakers I already had. When I took the speaker back outside and told him how lousy it sounded he got irritated and tried to put down my knowledge of stereo equipment.

Speakers, Home theaters and Amplifiers that are made in China cheaply and passed off as high quality made in Germany, England, America, Japan reputable brands and sold out of white vans. They will change the names slightly so you will think you are getting a genuine product.
They will try and pass off Grafdale's as Wharfedale's etc. Many of the sales take place in the parking lots of Bunnings, Best Buy, Home Depot, Banks, Car washes, Gas Stations, Construction sites, any where there is a large public car park and they are looking to rip you off!
They will give you a cock and bull story about the extra home theater system he's got to unload. He'll even point you to the company website to prove they are worth up to 10 grand. Watch out for the speaker guys in suv's or pickup trucks and vans selling home theater equipment.
They end up on eBay and Gumtree! As a result of this worldwide white van scam, thousands upon thousands of these speakers, home theater systems, amplifiers etc end up being resold on eBay or Gumtree.
I don't see a problem in you the consumer buying the speakers as long as you know that your buying cheap low quality speakers that look fancy. Do not buy any of the Home Theatre or AV systems as they have substandard electrical components. Being a seller on eBay from time to time I will sell speakers only from the list below for the right consumer price and clearly state they are cheap white van speakers, I hope all other eBay and Gumtree sellers will do the same. Please note I will never resell Amplifiers, Home Systems or AV units from the list as they will not meet electrical safety standards of most countries worldwide.
Some are not even safe to operate and will not meet the electrical standards of most countries. Buyer beware! Digital Audio 7. They've branched out into projectors, first, ones with "HD" in the model number and now, they've all got "4K" in the model number. Of course they're far, far, below even HD in native resolution. Also, brand names for projectors and speakers change every month or 2 or 3 as bad reviews start popping up.
Same boxes and photos, just a different name printed. I broke up a sale in the parking lot behind my work building. They were slick and about to close on a co worker. The van had HT emblems on it, they had glossy brochures, company shirts, etc.. Typical listing at linky, almost all the speakers showing up are cheapo plastic Bose jewel knockoffs with unpowered "sub".

And yes, they actually were in a white van. The first time I was in Dayton, OH and actually looked at the speakers; not impressive. The second time was in Laffayete, IN where I pretty much ignored the guy. Apart from us on this board with home audio systems, I would think the audience for this scam has to be almost extinct at this point. I almost never see sound systems in any homes I visit. Usually music is played through the Bluetooth sized speaker or some cheap home theater in a box setup in a family room or basement.

White van scam in Markham I got scammed yesterday by these 2 individuals claiming to receive extra home theater equipment by accident at home depot parking lot at Highway 7 and Woodbine. I feel so stupid to fall for it.
Over the last several weeks, there have been several reports of suspicious activity in the retail areas of Charlotte County, most notably the Murdock section. There have been reports of this in the Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, and other big box store parking lots. The reports concern a white van with people selling electronic items and speakers from the van.
