Trevor Lawrence gets nod as Jacksonville Jaguars' starting QB for Week 1 vs. Houston Texans
Back when he was still a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, quarterback Gardner Minshew II said he wanted an opportunity to compete for a starting job. The Washington product is still waiting for that chance, and looking back, he should have gotten it in Duval. In Philly, he became the primary backup behind incumbent Jalen Hurts. The Bengals' search has gone much longer — dating to when Cincinnati drafted David Klingler from the University of Houston as their heir apparent to Boomer Esiason, who took the Bengals to a Super Bowl following the season. In , both the Jaguars and Bengals took a quarterback No. Palmer and Leftwich took the stage with great anticipation in Cincinnati and Jacksonville. The winner is unsurprising: top overall pick Trevor Lawrence. We didn't run the ball very well. I kind of in my mind had that [deadline] after the second preseason [game] that we kind of have to get someone ready to play in three weeks.
