We need Audiophile Edition version of Port
First of I want to say that I have been using Sonos products since Besides Sonos, I had a lot of gear but none of it could match Sonos's ease of use and sound quality for the price. I have to come clean and say that I am used to using Sonos everywhere and I love it. As an audiophile, I was looking to replace my aging Sonos Connect with Port and realized from all the reviews that it does not have a better digital output. This was a show stopper for me and it is a show stopper for all audiophiles out there.

In fact lots of people — and Jim Morrison would probably not have approved, such was the state of audio consumption in his world. What of the Sonos Port? It can be one of the least important parts of the chain but equally pretty important. But casting aspersions before the dough has risen is not wise in audio…. In Sonos introduced the ZonePlayer90 streamer which became the similarly looking re-badged Connect soon thereafter. Streaming was at infant school and in dealer showrooms all these little white boxes were placed with the least and most expensive HiFi. Sonos has always had broad reach.

Released in early , the Port is a newer and more versatile and more expensive version of the company's Connect no longer available ; it has a better built-in DAC, supports AirPlay 2 and, thanks to its bespoke all-black design, looks more like a typical audio component. It has RCA and digital coaxial audio outputs for connecting a stereo or an AV receiver, and thus allows you to control and play music on that system via the Sonos app, just as if it were a Sonos speaker. The Port also has an RCA audio in port for connecting audio sources, like a turntable with a built-in preamp or CD player; this then allows you to play music from those sources on your existing Sonos speakers. It essentially eliminates the need for you to manually turn on the receiver or stereo, or switch to the proper inputs, because everything just turns on when you start streaming via the Sonos app to stream music.

However, the Port's talents do not end there.
A surprisingly poor review of the Port was posted on their website a few days ago. For them it was step backwards compared to the Connect. Interestingly they felt these attributes remained to a significant extent even when using a quality outboard Dac.
