Fifteen years ago, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Nelson Martis cruised the Interstate 95 corridor, sometimes driving up to 40 miles simply because his fellow troopers needed his Spanish skills. Martis was the only Spanish-speaking Florida Highway Patrol trooper assigned to Palm Beach County back then, and at times he was called upon to translate on his time off from work, as well as before and after shifts. The addition of eight Spanish-speaking troopers since means he no longer logs as many miles in his patrol car, but there still aren't enough bilingual officers to deal immediately with every situation.
