What Do Speaker Impedances Mean?
Before we can explain what dual voice coil speakers are, you first have to understand what a voice coil is and how a speaker works.
All speakers have what is called a voice coil. The voice coil is a coil of wire wrapped around a cylinder that accepts the current from the amplifier. This current causes the voice coil to react with the speaker magnet which moves that cylinder up and down. The speaker cone is attached to the cylinder which produces air pressure when it moves creating sound. A standard speaker has only a single voice coil and are perfect for standard stereo setups using multiple speakers.
These are called single voice coil SVC speakers. A dual voice coil DVC speaker is a little bit different. A dual voice coil speaker has two voice coils that allow a single speaker to output both stereo channels through one speaker, creating a stereo sound from a single speaker location. Many classic cars came with only one speaker installed in the dashboard.
Dual voice coil speakers are perfect for replacing a standard dash speaker, because they allow both stereo channels to come through from a single location. Another advantage that a dual voice coil speaker has over a standard speaker is more control of impedance depending on how you wire it. A standard speaker can only be wired one way, but with a dual voice coil speaker you have much more flexibility.
For example, the standard wiring technique for a dual voice coil speaker is to wire with both channels in as left and right speakers — which uses both voice coils for a stereo mix:.
Another method is to wire both voice coils in series. This will make the voice coils work together to create a 8 ohm mono speaker most older dash speakers were mono 8 ohm or 10 ohm speakers :.

Connect four speakers to your Amp or Connect:Amp
The speaker ohm rating is an indication of the speaker's AC impedance, which varies with the frequency of the input signal. This variation of the speaker's impedance can be seen on the speaker's spec sheet impedance curve. This is why the spec sheet indicates this speaker to have an 8 ohm "nominal impedance. Most of the speakers are available in alternative ohm ratings usually 4, 8 an 16 ohm versions.

How to Connect 2 Speakers to 1 Amplifier
It is not possible to wire two 8 ohm speakers to equal 8 ohms. In other words, it is impossible to make two 8 ohm speakers into an 8 ohm load. The only options you have are to use a single 8 ohm speaker or wire the speakers in series for 16 ohms or in parallel for 4 ohms. To get a total output of 8 ohms, you can wire the two 8 ohm speakers in parallel for 4 ohms and then wire that in series with a small resistor a 3 ohm and 5 ohm resistor for a total off 8 ohms.

SERIES & PARALLEL SPEAKER WIRING
You have selected the. And it's a great question because it's extremely important to make sure that, 1 a cabinet or speaker load of some kind is connected to your tube amp at all times, and 2 connecting multiple cabs correctly is absolutely crucial for proper, safe operation of your amp. Correct speaker connections will maintain the tone of your amp and ensures the tube and amplifier reliability you expect. There's no easy way to explain 'the why' behind the correct connections although we'll take a stab at it in a later post , BUT This first post details the most common and standard speaker connection question we get:. How to hook up two 8 ohm speakers to your Mesa click to enlarge. Mesa cabinets built after the year offer a Parallel Output in addition to the Input jack. If your amp doesn't provide the two 4 ohm jacks as seen in the picture above, connect the 4 ohm Output from your amp to the Input of your first cab, then out of the Parallel Output of Cab 1 into the Input of Cab 2 as seen below.
How to connect speakers in parallel
Speaker wire is used to make the electrical connection between loudspeakers and audio amplifiers. Modern speaker wire consists of two or more electrical conductors individually insulated by plastic such as PVC , PE or Teflon or, less commonly, rubber. The two wires are electrically identical, but are marked to identify the correct audio signal polarity.

Oct 28th Mark. We've broken the explanations down into two FAQ articles: Input devices such as instruments and preamps, and output devices , usually speaker cabinets or headphones. There is another FAQ that talks about ohms and impedance from the instrument, or input perspective. What the heck are impedance and ohms?
Speaker Cabinet Wiring and Impedances We get many questions about speaker loads and impedance when it comes to matching a Bass Amplifier with a Speaker cabinet. Most players want to get the maximum amount of available power out of their amplifier while allowing the flexibility of adding additional speakers when the need arises. You will first need to know the Minimum "load" requirements of your amplifier and how much power the amplifier produces at 8-Ohms, 4-Ohms and in some, but not all cases 2-Ohms. When adding additional speakers cabinets to unleash your amplifier's additional power reserve, remember, you must DOUBLE your amplifier's power to gain only a 3db increase in volume a very small increment. So, think of doubling your amplifier power more as a dynamic headroom reserve rather than as a means to play louder. However, the additional speakers that you use will generate a much greater ability to produce volume due to additional cone area pushing the airwaves. So, now we explore how these speaker cabinet wiring schemes are handled.
The ohm is a measurement of the electric resistance between two points. In a speaker, the ohm is a bad thing. The lower the ohms the less energy it takes to drive the speaker. The less energy, the more you get out of your amps.
