Alcoholics Anonymous
As the term suggests, meetings of this type are open to alcoholics and their families and to anyone interested in solving a personal drinking problem or helping someone else to solve such a problem. Most open meetings follow a more or less set pattern, although distinctive variations have developed in some areas.
A chairperson describes the AA program briefly for the benefit of any newcomers to AA in the audience and introduces one, two or three speakers who relate their personal drinking histories and may give their personal interpretation of AA. Midway through the meeting there is usually a period for local AA announcements, and a treasurer passes the hat to defray costs of the meeting hall, literature, and incidental expenses.
The meeting adjourns, often followed by informal visiting over coffee or other light refreshments. Guests at AA open meetings are reminded that any opinions or interpretations they may hear are solely those of the speaker involved. All members are free to interpret the recovery program in their own terms, but none can speak for the local group or for AA as a whole.
These meetings are limited to alcoholics and those who think or know they have a problem with drinking. They provide an opportunity for members to relate their experiences with one another on problems related to drinking patterns and attempts to achieve stable sobriety. They also permit detailed discussion of various elements in the recovery program.

This page has been archived and is no longer updated. Chairing a session at a conference involves more than reading biographical sketches out loud or interrupting speakers when their time is up. An effective chairperson creates a sense of coherence throughout the sometimes diverse presentations. He or she brings the speakers closer to the audience by introducing them warmly, ensures that everything runs smoothly, and wraps up the session in a way that leaves everyone feeling good about it. Accordingly, chairing a session is not something you improvise. Rather, it is something you prepare for carefully — as carefully as a presentation. How can you introduce speakers in a sincere and interesting way if you have never met them?
Today's AA Meetings
Alcoholics Anonymous AA is an international fellowship requiring no membership dues or fees dedicated to helping alcoholics peer to peer in sobriety through its spiritually inclined Twelve Steps program. Bob Smith M. Bob in an Akron, Ohio hospital. Wilson put to Smith that alcoholism was not a failure of will or morals, but a malady from which he had recovered as a member of the Christian revivalist Oxford Group. The Twelve Steps are presented as a suggested self-improvement program of initially admitting powerlessness over alcohol and acknowledging its damage, then listing and striving to correct personal failings, making of amends for past misdeeds, and continued spiritual development while helping other alcoholics towards sobriety through the Steps. The Steps also suggest the healing aid of an unspecified God—"as we understood Him"—but are still accommodating to agnostic , atheist , and non-theist members. Besides requiring a member to only have a declared desire to stop drinking, the Twelve Traditions hold that helping others recover from alcoholism is AA's primary purpose.

Addiction isn't a choice. That statement may not seem groundbreaking today, but the idea of alcoholism as an illness was a new concept in when the book Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered from Alcoholism was published. Known as the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous , the publication not only changed the conversation about alcoholism, but also catapulted the Twelve Step model of recovery into the public's eye. The Twelve Steps are a set of guiding principles in addiction treatment that outline a course of action for tackling problems including alcoholism, drug addiction and compulsion. Step 1 : We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable. Step 2 : Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

The quality of human relationships depends largely upon the way we communicate with each other. It depends not only on what we say but how we say it; not only on what we do but our motives for doing it. Our tone of voice and even our smallest actions are elements of communication; many of us are hardly aware of these. When partners in a marriage are held together by a bond of love, mutual respect, and a desire to please and comfort, communication naturally falls into patterns that express these feelings and give both husband and wife confidence in each other and a sense of security and mutual dependence. When a relationship is distorted by an unbalanced dependence, or by suspicion, hostility, excessive demands, and expectations, these flaws reveal themselves in the way the two people communicate with each other. If a man marries a woman because he was attracted by her warm maternal quality, as many alcoholics do, he is likely to be the dependent one.
