We had the chance to sit down and talk with Greenhouse OPEN speaker Joelle Emerson, the CEO of Paradigm, a consultancy she created that partners with companies who are prioritizing building more inclusive organizations. Greenhouse: How did your career start, and how did you find your way to Paradigm? I grew frustrated by the reactive nature of litigation and founded Paradigm to take a more proactive approach to building more inclusive, equitable organizations. We partner with companies who believe that building inclusive organizations is core to their success as a business, and we help them design systems, processes, and cultures that advance those goals. As a way to encourage diversity in teams, Joelle works alongside leaders in these orgs to build comprehensive diversity strategies in HR, recruiting, communications, and policy. Joelle : Unconscious bias refers to the information, attitudes, and stereotypes that inform our subconscious information-processing. We rely on unconscious bias to help us quickly filter and evaluate the massive amount of information our brains are receiving at any given moment. Joelle : Bias can lead us to hold different people to different standards, to seek out information that confirms beliefs we already hold, and to hire people we like instead of people who are best for the job.

Others have shown that some trainings can be effective. Clearly, not all trainings are equally good — and none are a silver bullet. But three things can help. First, strike a careful balance between communicating that all humans have biases and emphasizing the importance of eliminating biases. Finally, make it action-oriented. Give people tactics and tips about what they can do differently to make sure their companies offer an even playing field.

Diversity in the tech industry is dismal, with white men making up the vast majority of its workforce. That being said, tech companies are aware of the lack of diversity and some are even actively taking steps to do something about it. Pinterest, for example, recently announced a new diversity initiative called Inclusion Labs , in partnership with a startup called Paradigm.
