Curiously, pre-SLM Westone guitars from the late 70s and the very early 80s are going for double the money - and to my taste, they're lesser creatures. They're just more apt to feature multi-wood striping and stained figured wood, maybe more attractive to vintage-heads than the more utilitarian, sports-car solids and metallics of the Spectrums. Tonally, these are both fat and bright, humbuckers thick but articulate, and tapped single-coil sounds that, thanks to unbalanced coils, are much girthier and richer than you think.

For a few years, Electra imported mostly clones of popular American designed guitars such as the Les Paul and the Stratocaster. In the first MPC guitars debut. Initially in the ' era, the first of the Electra MPC guitars were pretty much Gibson Les Paul clones with the headstock that was very close to what came on the Les Paul. This resulted in a Lawsuit filed by Gibson claiming copyright infringement. After the lawsuit was settled, Electra Changed the headstock design from the Gibson style to what is known as the "Wave" Headstock. I have an early version "lawsuit version" pictured here. There were many ads in guitar magazines with images of famous guitarists playing Electras. Elvin Bishop "Fooled around and Fell in Love" actually had a very cool and collectible version called the "Tree of Life", which was very similar to a hollow body Gibson ES The coolest feature of this guitar is that it had the Tree of Live inlayed into the fretboard! It is a very collectible and desirable Electra to own, and the finest examples have skyrocketed in price recently.

Wednesday, April 20, Matsumoku. Around Matsumoku began in Matsumoto, Japan, as a family owned woodworking business that specialized in tansu Japanese for chest of drawers and butsudan Japanese for Buddha altar. Matsumoku was contracted to build its sewing machine cabinets, and in became a partially owned subsidiary of Singer, Japan. Matsumoku also built amp cabinets, speaker boxes and wooden cabinets for audio and tv makers. By the mid 's Matsumoku began to look into other woodworking markets and, as it had on its staff several skilled luthiers, ventured into production of modest classical guitars, small steel stringed acoustic guitars and violins. However, other Japanese companies were producing similar instruments, Matsumoku set out to distinguush itself by producing high quality acoustic and electric archtop guitars.
