10 bass speaker

Smooth Sound speakers are extremely clean and round with superb headroom. Equipped with neodymium magnets and aluminium baskets, they offer great linear excursion and dynamics. They are ideal for modern styles where extended low end is required. The proprietary aluminium basket was specially designed to avoid sound wave reflections on the rear side of the cone, thereby allowing for faster and better cooling of both the voice coil and the air moved by it. Punch Sound speakers offer great dynamics and super-fast response, giving the player an extremely solid bass sound.

Thread starter Fulldrive-1 Start date Jun 29, Fulldrive-1 Senior Member. Messages 5, I have always wondered about this. I have never played bass but I've been playing guitar for 40 years. We guitar players all use 12" speakers.

When I first started playing, a long time ago, the 2x15 bass cabinet was what everybody was using. Sounded just fine to me. Then there was a brief flirtation with the big Cerwin Vega 18" folded horns. Those things were portable earthquakes. Now for a long time it seems that bass players are all gravitating towards 10" speakers. This is not new because the SVT was the classic big-stage rig a long time ago, and it had 8x10 cabinets.

So what's the deal? You'd think that if 12" works for guitar, then for bass you'd need 15" or even 18" speakers to handle all those low frequences. But 10" is the thing. Anybody know why? Messages 9, I know for me, it was the response time of the speaker. The tens seemed less "sluggish" if that makes sense.

Messages 1, It's not about speaker diameter. My bass amps have tens, and most of my guitar amps have twelves with one fifteen. A bass rig needs more surface area and more cone excursion, and sometimes that goal is more easily met with several smaller speakers rather than one large one.

Note that the original Fender Bassman had a single fifteen, which led to a lot of warranty returns for damaged speakers. This resulted in the very successful 4x10 Bassman, which is being manufactured today. I'd had a number of 1x15 bass amps, including a '63 Ampeg B15N, and I am perfectly happy with my ten inch rigs. Primakurtz Member. Messages 2, Because, with modern speakers, size does not equate to frequency response.

Total cone area matters - that's why the classic Ampeg 8x10 works so well. Older 15" and 18" speakers were a little sluggish, but that hasn't really been an issue since the wonderful EV15 came out. These days, you can find great bass cabs using multiple 5, 8, 10, and 12 inch speakers. Also, in general, we don't need to produce the fundamental note frequencies. The human ear hears the first and second harmonics better, and most of these are above 70hz or so.

It is fun to anger sound engineers with a stage-rumbling 30hz note, but that's about the only reason to do it. NortheastHick Silver Supporting Member. Messages 6, Yes it seems counterintuitive, but like someone above said, the response of 10's is much quicker and immediate. Leave the boominess and stage rattling low-lows for the PA's subwoofers. BlueTalon Member. Messages I have a Phil Jones Suitcase bass amp that has four 5" drivers in it.

The sound is incredible. When I started playing bass 35 years ago, I had cabinets, and they sounded great. IMO the demands on equipment have changed.

I don't think it would make much difference if any for a bass player in a '60s rock band to use 10s, 12s or 15s. But with slaps and pops and high speed playing, the amps need to handle amplitude and frequency spikes now more than they ever had to then. Speakers are all about pushing air, and lower frequencies require more air. But speakers also have to accurately translate the signal, and the better the response time, the more accurately the speaker can produce the sound without puking.

Messages 8, I saw a bassist set up an SRW head with a 8x8 cab. Called "Henry the 8x8". I laughed and thought "how silly" Tell you what Too close and it would knock you over. The SVT cab was an interesting take on bass reproduction.

Ampeg specifically tuned the amp and cab to NOT produce the lowest lows as there was no speaker available at the time that could handle the lows. So what you hear on the low E string is not the fundamental, but overtones. Today speakers can handle the lows. I personally like the sound of 10s for bass. At home I play through either a super reverb or a bassman I modded and put in a 2x10 cab, both are guitar amps and both sound great at practice volumes.

Messages 39, TheoDog Silver Supporting Member. Messages 20, This is the coolest learning I have learned in a quite a while! I was always impressed by bass rigs with 1x15 cab below a 4x10 cab. Makes me want a 2x10 for my Dr. Messages 44, In a word, punchier.

TheoDog said:. Strat Member. Messages 3, I only use 10's. What do I know Fulldrive-1 said:. The Golden Boy Member. I like the sound of 15s. I'm thinking of gravitating towards single 15 cabs. While the 2x15 is my favorite- and to some extent, it's easy to load with the "tilt and push" method, vs. I'd love a couple of 1x15 cabs that sound awesome but weigh the same as my rack.

Many bassists looking to get more bottom out of their bass rig have considered adding a bass cabinet with a bigger speaker, such as a 1x15 or maybe even a 1x18! Cabinets like these have a popular reputation for providing more low end than their smaller counterparts, such as 2x10, 4x10 and 2x12 cabinets. This seems like a fair assumption, but the fact of the matter is that speaker size alone does not give any indication of what the cabinet will sound like. To help answer the question of how low these cabs can go, we will look at their frequency response specs. From comparing these two speaker cabinets, it may seem like the old myth that fifteen inch speakers go lower may ring true. The BR goes higher because it has a horn driver, where the two MBE cabinets do not have horn drivers.
