View of 52nd Street entrance. MCC, a long-running Off Broadway company focusing on new writing, broke ground yesterday on its first permanent home on West 52nd Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, in Manhattan.

Designed by Andrew Berman Architect , the 27,sq-. The facility, which will principally make use of concrete and reclaimed Douglas Fir wood, occupies the first floor of the Avalon Clinton complex, which also includes residential units.

The principal spaces include the 4,sq. Theatre 1, which will feature permanent seats in an end-stage configuration; Theatre 2, a 1,sq-. The Brooklyn-based artists Francesco Simeti will create two new visual art installations. An interior public space will feature a tapestry composed of historic images relating to theatre, sets, masks, and props from cultures around the world.

The theatre, which is to be open for the season, marks the end of a long road for the theatre, which first started producing in and has occupied various spaces around the city.

Large disks of light float and flow throughout the lobby and guide patrons up the stairs to the balcony level. Their seemingly random spacing belies a careful arrangement that creates a visually appealing pattern. MCC Theatre Breaks Ground on First Permanent Home

MCC asked us to create a home for their community of artistic directors, playwrights, actors, technicians, youth program, and patrons. They wanted a facility that allowed for collaboration and synergy between its members. Flexibility to run multiple productions simultaneously and spaces allowing for them to expand their range and ambition was critical. We worked together to develop a program, which included a seat proscenium theater and a seat flexibly configured performance space. The lobby was imagined as a landscape to be fully used throughout the day, by the entire MCC community.

The long-awaited move will provide the nomadic, nonprofit company with a stable home for the first time — and allow its founders to expand both the number of productions and the scope of its community outreach. For the past decade, the group — which was founded in by Telsey and its two other artistic directors, Robert LuPone and William Cantler — has rented the seat Lucille Lortel Theatre on Christopher St. But its development and outreach initiatives, including a PlayLabs reading series and a Youth Company after-school program, have been based at various spots all around the city.

One of the only theaters in the country led continuously by its founders—Artistic Directors Bob LuPone, Bernie Telsey, and Will Cantler—MCC fulfills its mission through the production of world, American, and New York premiere plays and musicals that challenge artists and audiences to confront contemporary personal and social issues through a shared theatrical experience, and robust playwright development and education and outreach initiatives that foster the next generation of theater artists, students, and audiences. The Youth Company is a free, after-school program for New York City high school students interested in developing their acting and dramatic writing skills. Within a creative, challenging, and supportive environment, teenagers from five boroughs participate in weekly workshops led by professional theater artists. Our students are encouraged to discover and explore their unique artistic voices as they work together to create and perform original work. Authenticity, originality, energy, honesty, enthusiasm - all of their experiences are essential to the process.

The space encompasses two state-of-the-art theaters, the Newman Mills Theater seat proscenium. When the madness of the world is too much to bear, we take refuge in the stories we love. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. As they travel through the tale, Alice By Heart explores the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward. This world premiere musical encourages us all to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times.

Named the Robert W. Inaugural shows at the new venue will be The Light by Loy A. In addition to producing a full season of productions, MCC Theater also runs an education program, new-work development lab, and a youth theatre company. Besides an opening ceremony and subsequent balloon drop, the leaders of MCC also announced several new initiatives.
