Speaker dust cap fixing

By wholte , May 22, in General Klipsch Info. Can someone tell me if the 12" woofer which has a 1" tear in the center dust cap can be repaired by a professional. I just wasn't sure if this was a serviceable part. It can be repaired by you if you're interested.

If you see it again it's because something has changed so please set your preferences accordingly. This is what you should do, as well, in case your dust cap is paper like material as in my ATC monitors.

Detach the brush of the vacuum cleaner if it has an aluminium telescope remove it, if it's full of dust discard the bag in advance, and hopefully you have a powerful enough vacuum cleaner ; 2. Place your speaker on a table, facing good lighting, for easy and comfortable access to the speaker; 3.

Start the vacuum cleaner on maximum level and slowly get close to the speaker no sudden movements, and try not to touch the cap, unless you have no other choice until the dust cap takes its initial shape.

This happens fast, so be ready to retreat with the vacuum cleaner just as fast; 4. Now we're half way done, the main part is completed. You can see the dust cap sort of roundish, but having some proeminent bump where the cap was folded before; 5.

Now it's about patience. We repeat step3 and get as close as possible to the region where the bump is, without touching the dust cap. Stay there, take your time, do this for at least minutes, the bump will become less and less prominent, until it's almost perfect, almost. Very careful use your fingers to assess the process and repeat, if necessary. I don't advise using needles, tapes, pens, sticks and such, unless you know for sure what you're doing.

I doubt it matters, to be honest, but I'm not an engineer to know this for sure. If what you say it's correct then any sucking applied in that region can harm the speaker, by moving it outwards. Don't think it's the case to be that pesimistic, as long as you are careful with the above procedure. It can affect response and add distortion. Just touching them gently probably wont hurt at all. We do it all the time with a soft brush to dust them off. However, there is a small risk of damaging the voice coil if someone pushes in the cone fairly hard, especially off center. This can rub the voice coil against the magnetic gap. My understanding has always been don't make a speaker cone to move off center by pushing on one side, and in the case of using a vacuum, pulling off center only because it can slightly damage the voice coil as the magnetic housing is a very close fit.

Good find, but sometimes you have to take risks like this, in my opinion. However, if you notice, the Barefoot guy refers to the "pushing in", and not the pushing out. Only an engineer that builds speakers could tell the truth in this case, I guess. However, other people over the internet that have tried the vacuum cleaner thing are fairly satisfied with the outcome.

Wish I had some professional, fast, cheap alternative to that, but I'm satisfied, all good to my ears. Thank you for the input, I think people should know what to do when such accidents take place with our monitors, and read a little before figuring out how to.

I had to learn this myself today, as my mother managed to bend one of my ATC 20s woofer's dust cap with the vacuum cleaner, without being ruptured. The deal was so good, I didn't even ask for a demo - I just assumed the worst and met him in a parking lot just after sundown. Lucky day. The bottom left 10" was to blame along with the 15", which had been repaired at one point with something brittle, most likely superglue. I removed the problem speakers from the cabs to examine them closer. Unfortunately, it took a really keen eye a few times to finally notice the exact issue of the 10" - I had placed the speaker on a Lazy Susan and meticulously inspected the edge with an LED penlight.
