How to use Ring with HomeKit

With a couple of HomeKit-compatible devices and an iPhone or iPad to control them alas, HomeKit works only with Apple devices , you can start from scratch and have a fully fledged smart-home system up and running in just a few minutes.

From there you can just as quickly create Automations which set up your devices to function autonomously or Scenes sets of commands that go to several devices simultaneously. Or you can control any of your devices directly using an app or even voice commands via Siri, the digital assistant built into Apple phones, tablets, computers, watches, and HomePod Mini smart speakers. The first consideration for anyone interested in HomeKit is whether you are able and willing to use Apple devices: HomeKit is strictly Apple-only.

And there remain a few categories of devices for which no great HomeKit option exists, most notably smart smoke alarms. This point is especially important if you already own smart devices and hope to have them all work together devices that rely on wireless Zigbee and Z-Wave, for instance, may not be compatible. Like the other voice-controllable smart-home systems—mainly Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant—HomeKit allows you to link together into one system a wide variety of smart-home devices from different manufacturers.

Two areas where HomeKit stands out from the others: how easy HomeKit is to set up and control all your devices through a single app, and also how your security and privacy are protected. Most smart devices have a companion app that is required for setup and control. On all current Apple devices, a preinstalled app called Home lets you control all of your smart devices. Once you set up a HomeKit device, it appears in Home and is controllable via the app or a Siri voice command.

You can name or rename it, and add it to a Group—and all of that information updates instantly on all your devices. One caveat, though: For some devices, special features are sometimes exclusive to the companion app. Those issues remain a hot topic with smart-home devices in general because they are internet-connected devices that by design track user movement and activities—sometimes including personal audio and video.

But for many people the modest sacrifice is worth the peace of mind. Many HomeKit-compatible devices also work with Google Assistant and Alexa—and can even be controlled using any of those platforms at the same time. So you might use a HomeKit Automation to have your thermostat lower the temperature and your smart lights shut off whenever you leave the house, and then use Alexa for other tasks, like dimming the lights when you want to watch TV.

We also have guides on Alexa-compatible devices and Google Assistant—compatible devices , for anyone using those systems. A hub may also be necessary to act as a repeater in your home if you use smart devices that rely on Bluetooth wireless rather than on other wireless standards used in the smart home, such as Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, or Zigbee, among others. If HomeKit has an Achilles heel, it is Bluetooth wireless because it often suffers from range issues and therefore can sometimes cause delays or just fail outright.

The solution for some people will be to add extra hubs around their home to act as Bluetooth repeaters for their devices. Further, in our testing we have encountered consistent problems when trying to use the HomePod Mini with Bluetooth. Whenever possible we recommend staying away from smart-home devices that rely on Bluetooth for communication.

As a voice-control platform, Siri and HomeKit have been vastly improved over the years, and yet in many ways they still feel rudimentary compared with Alexa. And though HomeKit can be awesomely fast at times, if you mess up the naming of your devices, you can often find yourself making repeated requests without success—and then giving in and using the Home app instead.

A more specific functional issue with HomeKit is its notifications system, which is far less useful than it should be. The top-tier Apple TV is an excellent media streamer, but it also enables remote access and automations for HomeKit devices.

If you want to stay in touch with your smart devices when you leave home, you need to add a HomeKit hub—either an Apple TV , an iPad , or a HomePod Mini the original HomePod, which is discontinued, can work as well.

We recommend the Apple TV over the other options because it does double duty as a great media streamer in addition to providing solid communication with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth smart devices; we added a second unit to reach distant Bluetooth devices on another floor in our testing we found that the HomePod Mini, though cheaper and also useful, currently suffers from issues communicating with Bluetooth HomeKit devices.

Both the Apple TV 4K and the previous 4th generation model are excellent, if pricey, media streamers. But the 4K model has a dramatically faster processor and more built-in storage, plus Gigabit Ethernet for speedier networking. This bulb is brighter and cheaper than most smart bulbs. It has several special features, and it easily integrates into a HomeKit system.

This indoor camera captures sharp images, has four options for video storage, and offers continuous recording. It can also distinguish between different motions and sounds. The Eufy Solo IndoorCam C24 captures stellar 2K-resolution video day and night, and it provides a wide, degree field of view.

We like that you have the option to store recordings locally on a microSD card or network attached storage NAS —and that includes the option of continuous recording locally. For more information, have a look at our guide to the best indoor security cameras. Just plug the dongle into your router, add it to the Home app, and start calling out commands to Siri or use the Home app.

These also allow you to make dumb lighting fixtures smart, so they can be put on Schedules as you would do with a lighting timer or have your devices be part of Scenes and Automations. For instance, we use one to turn a light on and off every day, but we can remote-control it as needed, too. And it works with most smart-home platforms, including HomeKit and Alexa.

But its most compelling feature as a smart thermostat is its inclusion of a remote sensor. You can add multiple sensors—an especially useful option in a home with separate climate zones or a poorly placed thermostat, which, in our experience, is almost all of them. In addition to working with HomeKit, the Ecobee SmartThermostat also has Amazon Alexa built in—a key feature for anyone who has a hybrid smart home. One important technical note before you jump to purchase: Installing the Ecobee requires a three-wire thermostat for power, or the use of an adapter cable; this may complicate things in older homes, many of which have two-wire setups.

This keypad lock allows for a quick exit or entry without the need to carry keys or even a smartphone, and it offers wide compatibility with other smart-home devices. Connecting the Yale Assure SL to your HomeKit system opens up lots of smart-home possibilities, such as controlling it through Siri or integrating with other HomeKit gear, like smart thermostats and smart lights. The Yale Assure SL, one of our top smart lock picks, lets you unlock your door with an app, automatically via geofencing, or with a keypad which is especially handy for when you want to give out temporary entry codes.

Abode has attractive hardware. This multi-purpose sensor lets you trigger HomeKit automations for a variety of reasons throughout your house. The Fibaro Motion Sensor can detect when a person enters a room and then trigger other devices or actions. But, unlike competing devices, it also detects light, temperature, and vibration. Its innovative design and excellent mounting options make it the easiest sensor to discreetly tuck into any corner of your house.

An optional camera adds an extra layer of security. Like many people who have a garage, you may forget to close the door sometimes. If you also have a HomeKit Hub on your system, you can add your door to automations to instruct, for example, certain lights or door locks to turn on or open when the garage door opens. For more information, have a look at our guide to smart garage-door opener controllers. The latest version of the Rachio has finally added HomeKit support.

The Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller makes yard work a breeze, with an easy-to-use interface and scheduling. It also works with Siri, so you can turn the system on and off, water specific zones, and delay run times, all using the sound of your voice. As we mention in our guide , the one drawback is that this system lacks any type of local control.
