It is not uncommon to do the two tests in that order. One major benefit is that ultrasound also allows for guided biopsies of masses ensuring that the biopsy needle specifically samples the mass and not any adjacent structures. I do not know if that was done for your cat and if the diagnosis of lymphoma was specific based on an aspirate or presumed. There are also additional histochemistry tests that can be done as well to make a proper diagnosis.
Prednisone is a corticosteroid that is anti-inflammatory and is a great drug if used by itself to slow down the progression of the tumor and delay the inevitable. However, it is also part of many chemotherapeutic regimens used to combat feline lymphomas. Radiation may be appropriate for an isolated lymphoma and surgery may be another option. In my experience, radiation is rarely utilized. Surgical removal of a mass can be worthwhile provided there are no local or distal metastases and may prove to be beneficial.
As to your concern, chemotherapy is well tolerated by cats and is not considered painful to them. You might want to reconsider your options based on cost, prognosis based on size or metastasis of tumor, and location.
