I was curious as to whether or not anybody else here jumped on the HomePod bandwagon. After losing a debate with myself surrounding fiscal responsibility, my intent to buy a nother bicycle this spring, and the long list of MFT camera glass on my wishlist I found myself setting an alarm for 2am local. No joy by so I went back to bed — but when I awoke for real 7ish? I chose Space Grey delivered to my doorstep.

Mostly because one occasionally hears tales of early delivery. The Siri functionality is interesting but, in my imagination, is taking a back seat to the sound part. Hoping for third party podcast support down the road — are you listening Marco? If it sucks, I have 14 days, right? Anyone else have a confession to make? Nope, but I've currently got my audio dollars in Sonos, and moving to HomePod would not only require me to replace that hardware, but Apple's hardware is more expensive per speaker.

It's another annoying platform war and that's a hard fix who've already bought into one platform or another. Today, Apple would only let me buy two anyway.

Apple's biggest strategic advantage, the more I think about this, is that if you want voice-controlled Apple music, it's the only game in town. And if you want music on your Apple watch, only Apple music fully supports you. I am sure Apple's audio quality will be great, but it can't rely on that alone.

There will always be better audio quality from another set of speakers that costs a bit more and is a bit bigger. That's admittedly appealing. This really seems like a device targeting apartment dwellers. If you have a full house a receiver and real speakers makes much more sense. If you want a kitchen device honestly the Amazon device seems better other than the lack of Siri. Kitchen devices get damaged easily and I'd hate to have a HomePod near the spaghetti sauce. A cheap Amazon dot on the other hand I'd feel less guilty about not that I have any desire for Alexa.

I'm glad Apple's competing here, but this is just a weird device that seems to only appeal to a small market segment. I think they should have licensed Siri to other device makers or done what Amazon and Google did and come out with a variety of devices.

When HomePod was first announced, I had planned to get one. But then a few months later I decided to spring for a Sonos playbar for our TV, and now we're a Sonos household. We were already sort of stuck with an Echo Dot because our smart thermostats aren't HomeKit compatible, so replacing the Echo Dot with Sonos's Alexa integration was quite convenient.

Worth noting: we're also Apple Music users. Even though Sonos doesn't support voice control for Apple Music, and probably never will, I haven't really felt the need for it. I am interested in a good living room speaker, and I like the lack of wires and ease of setup.

But since I don't use Siri or Apple Music Spotify , there are other similar products that have decent airplay audio quality. Sonos isn't there yet until they support airplay 2. I'm also considering Libratone and Marshall. Quote: This really seems like a device targeting apartment dwellers.

It doesn't appear to support internet radio, which rules it out for me. I listen to albums in a different context. Even AirPlay 2 wouldn't make this better, since you can you buffer 10 or 20 minutes of a live stream? It would just be all the disadvantages of current AirPlay.

Plus, when listening to normal Apple Music, I'd want my activity to be shared to my Apple Music profile when I'm the one listening to the music or at least when my phone is on home WiFi and for activity not to be shared when my wife is playing music and I'm not home. Nor would I want what other household members listen to on it to affect my Apple Music recommendations in any way.

This is a hard problem, of course, which is why I'm fine for now with just having a separate Echo-only Prime Music subscription which at least doesn't jack up my music recommendations when my kid wants to listen to Yackety Sax 10 times in a row. Some of the "early access" reviews that are trickling out are truly precious.

Trying not to let my snark get the best of me here, but as is pretty obvious, I'm not a fan of the HomePod, its limitations, or its price. But I'll keep an open mind and am genuinely interested to hear real-life hands on reactions as Ach regulars get theirs. Seems by the comments here and the nature of the device itself that its biggest competition is Sonos. Aiming for painless high quality audio, with a focus on privacy.

The HomePod, unlike other Apple products, seems to only have the brand name to prop it up. Is this a licensing thing? I think Apple really dropped the ball here. It also has substantial restrictions some of which may be a selling point that the others don't, both in terms of enabling hardware and software. Does the HomePod run on D cells? It needs to in order to surpass the apex of Apple designed speaker engineering.

Late to market and short on features after everybody and their mom got some sort of cheap smart speaker for the holidays. The delay was a real missed opportunity. While the AirPods have been a real hit in the personal music space, the HomePod as it exists now is a non-starter. I have a hard time seeing many sales for the over 30 crowd who likely already have some sort of speaker ecosystem. What does it need? Will probably buy the next iteration when they become available overseas. Or maybe not depending on iCloud Music support.

Anybody else waiting on this obvious feature? I'm less interested in the HomePod hardware and more interested in AirPlay 2. I want to want HomePod and I might get one at some point, but I'm very firmly in wait-and-see mode. I think I probably fit squarely in the target market. So, better sound quality, integration with the services I actually use, and my flatmate can just use AirPlay to get his Spotify tunes onto it when he needs to.

One of the real selling points, not mentioned often enough, is that since you have to have Prime you already have access to Prime Music without an additional subscription. I'm deep in the Apple ecosystem, have some home kit devices installed and I couldn't see adding another voice assistant to the mix. If this works as described, it will let me move my Bose Soundlink mini out of the room and use it on the patio instead.

Again, in my experience you over-generalize. I have plenty of kitchen counter well away from the stove top where sauces simmer, at least on holidays and special occassions. Stuff occassionaly breaks. One repairs, replaces or rethinks. I should find a better use for that space. As an apartment dweller, I haven't been very happy with Sonos.

The place isn't the most WiFi-friendly, so Sonos has always been dodgy. Hard to tell if HomePod is that much better, but it might be worth trying. No hurry, though. Each unit could use its mics and continuously adjust for optimal sound. Zero configuration at all. Who else does that? I plunged. I am a bit concerned about this no home sharing yet and not being able to play my music files from the Mac. Worse case, I may have to convert my iTunes playlists to Apple Music playlists.

In the six years since Sony introduced its first high-resolution Walkman, the Japanese giant has offered hi-res audio support across a variety of portable players, from the very affordable to the very high end. But, alongside the likes of Cowon and FiiO, Sony is most focused on the budget end of the market, and has recently reaped its reward in the form of a What Hi-Fi? Award for the NW-A Clearly not one to rest on its laurels, Sony has now replaced that budget belter with this NW-A55L, and with it has set a new benchmark for affordable hi-res portable players. Its palm-sized, slimline design is unremarkable, though the last thing you want from a second device in your pockets is big and garish. The foolproof interface, while perfectly easy to navigate on the touchscreen, is a basic affair too — more functional than fancy. The absence of wi-fi rules out directly streaming networked files and from music services — not surprising for a player of this price — although more of a shame is that Sony has dropped the FM tuner from this model. Next to the homescreen logo is another to turn the player purely into a USB DAC , so it can act as a sound-enhancing middle-man between your music source and headphones.

There's a crazy number of streaming options now, from TV's with DLNA access to Sonos who's much more reasonably priced now to AV receivers that offer streaming options. I hope Logitech goes out of business quickly so somebody competent can buy the rights to the Squeezebox product line and codebase. Had one of those Stream 83i's for a couple of years. Love it.

But even their success would be dependent on the proximity of their router in relation to the Bluesound device. Specifically in relation to the component connected to it. Granted, cell phones seem to roll out every 5 minutes and use the very latest technologies, but they have their problems and their development effort, by comparison, is enormous.
