We know that we gather this afternoon on indigenous land and we follow the lead of the first peoples who despite massive genocidal violence have never relinquished the struggle for land, water, culture, their people. We especially salute today the Standing Rock Sioux.

Angela Davis is an internationally-known scholar and an icon in the movement to combat oppression in the U. For more than a half century, her work as a writer, teacher, and activist has emphasized the importance of building communities of struggle for economic, racial, and gender equality. Davis is the author of nine books and numerous articles.

Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement demonstrates why she is a world-renowned lecturer on liberation politics. In addition to her extensive literary output, Davis has been featured in a many films, such as Black Power Mixtape, ; Free Angela and All Political Prisoners ; and 13 th In , when she was appointed to teach in the philosophy department at UCLA, then Governor Ronald Reagan and University of California leadership terminated her contract.

Her capture and arrest led to her eighteen-month incarceration and trial, during which she became the most famous political prisoner of her generation. In , she was acquitted of all charges. After her acquittal, Davis re-established her career in academia at an array of preeminent institutions, including The Claremont Colleges.

Once again, her hiring incited resistance from administrators, trustees, and donors, resulting in the termination of her appointment after two semesters. Controversy may have followed Professor Davis wherever she taught but, despite this, she crafted a career of distinction of more than forty years. She held appointments at numerous prestigious institutions both in the US and abroad.

Professor Davis will join us for two events. Both events are only open to members of the Claremont Colleges community. Endowed in through the generosity of Ena H. Thompson, these annual lectures encourage a broader understanding and appreciation of history. Generally held in the spring semester, the lectureship brings a distinguished historian to the Pomona College campus for a week of intensive interaction with students, faculty, and alumni.

The visiting lecturers are elected both on the basis of their past contributions to the discipline and of the importance of their current research in advancing the field. Angela Y. Davis is known internationally for her ongoing work to combat all forms of oppression in the U. She is a living witness to the historical struggles of the contemporary era. Professor Davis's political activism began during her childhood in Birmingham, Alabama. But it was not until that she came to national attention after being removed from her teaching position in the Philosophy Department at UCLA as a result of her social activism and her membership in the Communist Party, USA. In she was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List on false charges, and was the subject of an intense police search that drove her underground and culminated in one of the most famous trials in recent U. During her sixteen-month incarceration, a massive international "Free Angela Davis" campaign was organized, leading to her acquittal in Professor Davis's long-standing commitment to prisoners' rights dates back to her involvement in the campaign to free the Soledad Brothers, which led to her own arrest and imprisonment. Today she remains an advocate of prison abolition and has developed a powerful critique of racism and the criminal justice system.

Angela Davis became a master scholar who studied at the Sorbonne. She joined the U. Communist Party and was jailed for charges related to a prison outbreak, though ultimately cleared. Davis was born on January 26, , in Birmingham, Alabama. She grew up in a middle-class neighborhood dubbed "Dynamite Hill," due to many of the African American homes in the area that were bombed by the Ku Klux Klan. Davis' father, Frank, owned a service station, while her mother, Sallye, taught elementary school and was an active member of the NAACP.

Few East Germans over the age of fifty fail to remember the state-organized solidarity campaign calling for the release of the US philosopher, communist and Black Power activist Angela Davis. The large-scale campaign firmly anchored the activist within the cultural memory of the GDR, which — in this critical phase of the Cold War — sought to position itself by asserting its commitment to the comrade. For her part, Angela Davis had hoped for an internationalist movement promoting a socialist, feminist, and non-racist democracy — the antithesis of her experiences of violence and oppression as a Black woman in the USA. This moment of hope provides the historical starting point for the exhibition, which features contemporary works by international artists. These works focus on the issues that the now emeritus professor campaigned on at the time, which are still pressing today, and thereby initiate discussion about the background, flaws, and unfulfilled potential of this unusual relationship between Davis and the GDR.

She is the author of over ten books on class , feminism , race , and the US prison system. Studying under the philosopher Herbert Marcuse , a prominent figure in the Frankfurt School , Davis became increasingly engaged in far-left politics.
