Took the boat out to Lake Mead today. Boat was acting up. Every time I would try to accelerate an ear piercing beep kept sounding, beeping intermitently and sometimes just long beeps. I thought it was my fish finder until I finally unplugged it and it kept going.
Finally I realized that if i adjusted the trim up and down that I could get the sound to stop. In order to make the sound go away I had to trim the outboard up 2stroke Merc then it would stop. If I trim it back down it starts again.
To keep the sound from coming back, i had to trim it up to where the prop was starting to come out of the water. Im clueless, anybody ever heard of anything like this?

Or, Its telling you I'm getting hot because of a clogged water jacket. Mines at the power head guys shop as we speak from the same exact scenario.
I just spent alot learning all the stuff I never cared about learning because I was uninformed. Learn from my mistake. Take it to a boat mechanic asap. Its cheaper to fix that, than ordering pistons from Quicksilver. Trust me. Good luck. PS- I don't get why trimming it up would make the sound go away, but then again I'm not a outboard mechanic.
It could be your lucky and theres a pinched wire in the rigging line coming from the motor and going into the stern. Somethings definitely wrong because the power was no bueno. I usually make mph at rpm, but today i was pushing it to rpm to get 33mph out of her. It was a short trip. Fished two spots, 1 bite, no fish, and called it a day knowing she needs some attention i didnt want to fuck something up. Check the owners manual.
Sounds like low oil. It is a saftey and decreases your ability to run at full power. You are on the right track, I just went through this with our motor and my mechanic on our Merc 2 stroke. Remove the cowling and there should be an oil reserve tank with a cap on it.
Remove the cap. Under the cap is the oil level sensor. When it drops down into air because the tank is not full , it triggers the alarm. So, here was the advice from my Merc mechanic that I followed. Assuming you have some oil in the tank inside the cowling, start the motor with the oil cap off that tank and the oil fluid level should raise if the system is working properly. You will also notice that by flipping the cap up and down you activate that alarm you have been hearing.
In fact, you will need to screw the cap back on quickly after the engine has run a little while because it will overflow the tank. If the level does not raise, then there is a problem with the system. Again, make sure there is oil in your tank before trying this. For us, the system was working but somehow the engine side tank dropped down in level about one third, just enough to periodically activate the alarm when we hit large wind chop which is pretty much daily in the SF bay.
Now I'm watching that engine oil tank level like a hawk to monitor. Also make sure to carry a spare gallon of gas in case you need to direct mix into you fuel tank. This is what leads many people to disconnect their VRO systems and go back to premixing.
Thanks to everyone that provided insight. I went down to check on the boat today and sure enough the 2-cycle oil was low, very low. Im lucky no damage occured or appears to have. Filled up the oil, and then took the boat out to Mead and it ran strong like it has all along. Now im experiencing another issue, which i will put in another thread. Thanks again. Check the cap to the oil spare reservoir under the engine cowling. It's a black plastic screw on cap with a wire coming out of it that goes to the alarm system.
On my merc , i had two of these go bad over 5 years or so. Efishnsea Teaching kids how to fish. Is this a era Mercury Optimax Motor? If so, search out the oil reservior lines that go into the reservior under the motor's cowling. The other alarm that used to piss me off was when the water pick-up would get blocked by a piece of kelp when paddie fishing. Overall I would buy the very same Optimax again-it was very reliable and sipped fuel.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, If you have a leak in the oil line, the oil travels up the line through pnumatics air pressure. It should have 7 pounds of pressure pushing the oil to the motor. Listen for an air leak also. Show hidden low quality content.
